Welcome back to the Wordplay 10 Questions. As ever we will be keeping it light, allowing our guests to expand on their answers as much as their time allowed. This week’s plucky contestant is Pings, check it.

1. Contestant, what’s your name, chosen craft and where are you based?

My name’s Dan and I go by the name of Pings. I’m based in Milton Keynes and I’m the owner of KingUnderground, which is a UK based record label. We have releases by Lewis Parker, Planet Asia, Lil Dap, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Mr Brown, Simiah, Cappo, Nappa, MCM, Fredfades & Ivan Ave, plus more.

2. How would you describe your sound?

I generally just make music I like; I was brought up on raw drums and chopped samples. I guess I’d have to say my sound is somewhat like that 90s Boom Bap sound.

3. Who / what do you consider to be the biggest influence on your music?

My biggest influence is my friends and the beats they make. That inspires me to get to the sampler. Obviously all the pioneers play a big influence too.

4. What’s the proudest moment to date for you as an artist?

I guess producing a track for Shabaam Sahdeeq. I have produced tracks for other artists, but that was when I was looking to find a feature and I was willing to pay money for a verse. With the track I did with Shabaam, I had sent some beats to a friend and he happened to be chilling with Sahdeeq. I got a reply saying “Yo, Shabaam wants to rock on this!” So that was a nice feeling.

5. Do you have any advice for our readers?

Just make music because you like making music, if it gets any further than that, then that’s just a bonus. If you get props from the right people, that’s all that matters.

6. Name 3 people you would love to work with and why?

Lewis Parker; I’m intrigued to see how he works in the studio, and how he could improve my sound. Thes One, same reasons, he’s just an incredible producer. There are a lot of other people I could say but I’m going to say Dre. I would love to see how he gets down in the studio, I’ve heard he’s very cut throat.

7. What have you got planned for the future?

Going triple platinum. Haha. I’d like one day to get a full production album out, with some killer features.

8. What’s the album you’ve played more than any other?

No idea, I’ve played too many albums, too many times. Non Phixion – The Future is Now, Nas – Illmatic, Gang Starr – Moment of Truth, Madvillain – Madvillainy, there’s loads more!

9. What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? And where?

Probably seeing Premo at the Jazz Café. Guru had just recently died so it was an emotional set, the crowd were very hyped, there was moshing and all sorts going on.

10. Name 3 things you can’t live without?

People close to you, music & eggs.

You’re question from Mr Brown. If you could play any rapper in a table tennis match, who would it be and could you beat them?

Haha good question. I’ve seen Evidence and Alchemist both posting videos of them playing Table Tennis so I’d be willing to take them both on! So yeah, I think I’d win!

Lastly, can you nominate another contestant and provide us with a question for them on your behalf?

Simiah, he’s killer on the beats! Why are you called Simiah?

Any last words/shoutouts?

Thanks to Wordplay for the Q&A. Shouts to all the crew and all the KU artists!
