Welcome back to the Wordplay 10 Questions. As ever we will be keeping it light, allowing our guests to expand on their answers as much as their time allowed. This week, we have a producer who’s just made a very welcome return after 5 years away, the super soulful Abstract Soundz…

1) Contestant, what’s your name, chosen craft and where are you based?
My name is Abstract Soundz and I’m a hip hop producer based in London.

2) How would you describe your sound?
The vibe I’m aiming for is that laid back, smooth, mellow, summertime bbq hip hop.

3) Who / what do you consider to be the biggest influence on your music?
My influences have changed over the last couple of years. I used to try and make DJ Premier and Just Blaze type beats, chopping and pitching up soul samples. But trecently I’m a bit more influenced by mid 90s Pete Rock stuff, trying to make beats with a bit of melody to them and I’m sampling a more diverse range of music as a result. Im a big fan of ATCQ, De La Soul and The Pharcyde and in the UK Im really feeling The Mouse Outfit and Hawk House, Age of Luna and Coops.

4) What’s the proudest moment to date for you as an artist?
That would be from late 2014 when a rapper from Birmingham called Lady Sanity, who I’d been working with, got one of our tracks “Dust” onto the BBC Radio 1Xtra playlist. Hearing the likes Mistajam and Trevor Nelson introducing our tune was nuts!

5) Do you have any advice for our readers who maybe trying to play the mad game of music?
Have fun with it and enjoy the journey! I try not to take myself or my music too seriously, some people pick it up in 5 minutes, for others the learning curve is a lot steeper, but as long as it puts a smile on your face it doesn’t matter how long it takes you to get to the standard that you wanna be at.

6) Name 3 people you would love to work with and why?
I’m gonna say Black Josh, Scorzayzee and Karizma who was in OutDaVille. They are some of my favourite artists in the UK and I think their vocal style is perfect for smooth melodic hip hop.

7) What have you got planned for the not so distant future?
I’ve already got a couple of tracks in the pipeline with Lady Sanity, hopefully were gonna be putting an EP together over the next few months. I’ve also been sending beats to a guy from the States called Loot, he’s dope, so looking forward to seeing what comes of that!

8) What’s the album you’ve played more than any other?
Its really hard to pick one, but there’s a few that I just don’t get tired of listening to: 2001, Outkast Greatest Hits, Midnight Marauders, Ready To Die, Illmatic, Stakes is High, The Infamous, Center of Attention by Pete Rock & INI, The Sagas of Klashneckoff and Council Estate of Mind have all been on heavy rotation over the years.

9) What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? And where?
The first gig I ever went to was Cypress Hill at Brixton Academy when I was about 14/15, that was pretty special. But within the last month I’ve been to see The Pharcyde at the Jazz Cafe and De La Soul play at WOMAD festival, and they both gave Cypress Hill a run for their money.

10) Name 3 things you can’t live without?
My laptop, music to sample and Harry Kane!

Lastly, can you nominate another contestant and provide us with a question for them on your behalf?
I would like to nominate Lady Sanity and I would like to ask her who her favourite female MCs are.

Any last words/shoutouts?
I just wanna say a massive thank you to everyone who was involved in putting my most recent project Work Hard Play Hard together! Also big ups to Wordplay for taking an interest in my music!
