Yes yes people! So, we’re reloaded, with another round of 10 Questions in the chamber. As ever we’re keeping it loose and allowing the artists to expand on the questions. So, this week we have the second member of the Broken Authors crew (See Invokal’s interview here), with the rather talented DJ Tones…

1) Contestant, what’s your name, chosen craft and where are you based?
DJ Tones, Scratch DJ/Producer form Hertfordshire.

2) How would you describe your sound?
Heavily sample based hip-hop with some other styles thrown in for good measure.

3) Who / what do you consider to be the biggest influence on your music?
As a hip-hop DJ & producer i’ve been exposed to so many styles of music over the years which include Jazz, Punk, Metal, Funk, Soul, Indie, Electro/Electronic, Rock, Reggae, Ska, Pop, Classical etc, it’s all been influential at some point.

Producers such as Muggs, Rick Rubin, The Bomb Squad, Duke Bootee, Prince Paul to name a few along with groups Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Jurassic 5, Blade, Leaders of the new school… The list goes on & on.

4) What’s the proudest moment to date for you as an artist?
There really isn’t one specific moment. My first record (vinyl) release in 1991 with a little label called Ruff Kut was a pretty big deal for me at the time.

It certainly wasn’t the best thing I’ve been involved with but it was the first of many record releases & collaborations to follow.

5) Do you have any advice for our readers who maybe trying to play the mad game of music?
Stay humble, be careful who you trust & expect to spend money before you have the slightest chance of making any.

Don’t be swayed by other peoples opinions, if you love what you’re doing stick with it & ignore the outside negatives & jealousies.

6) Name 3 people you would love to work with and why?
Very difficult to say as i’ve been lucky to have worked with so many people i’ve had much admiration for over the years already.

Would be great to do something with Ugly Duckling, they’re such an underrated group in my opinion, very positive & hard working.

My dream would have been Beastie Boys as they’ve been the most influential group for me but unfortunately there’s no chance of that coming true. 2 ok?!

7) What have you got planned for the not so distant future?
I’m featured on quite a few releases coming out this year with groups such as Mantis Chapter, Uncle Mic Nitro, Iceski & Merlin, Planet of the Fakes & have a couple of other projects under way to keep me busy.

8) What’s the album you’ve played more than any other?
Beastie Boys – Paul’s Boutique.

9) What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? And where?
UK Fresh 86 at Wembley Arena. I doubt i’ll ever get to see so many legends of Hip Hop under one roof again.

10) Name 3 things you can’t live without?
Family, friends & music.

Any last words/shoutouts?
Thanks to everyone who helped out with the Broken Authors album & thanks even more so for their patience, including Invokal. It took a little longer than expected to finish but we got there in the end!
