Yes yes people! So, we’re back with another chunk of 10 Questions. As ever we’re keeping it loose and allowing the artists to expand on the questions. So, this week we have Brighton based lyricist, artist and journalist… Invokal
1) Contestant, what’s your name, chosen craft and where are you based?
Invokal (Speech Urchin) – MC/Singer/Spoken Worder/Illustrator. Originally from the Midlands, now I reside in Brighton UK.
2) How would you describe your sound?
Eclectic. I have a passion for many genres and styles, and the music I make often reflects that. I have a deep urge for authenticity in music so it has to be passionate and meaningful. Lyricism is one of the most important parts to my final sound.
3) Who / what do you consider to be the biggest influence on your music?
The world around me. My friends, family and the musicians and lyricists who I follow and work with. People i’ve shared stages with, and women i’ve shared my heart with. I’m also a firm believer that the bigger the repetoire of an artist – the better the music they make, so I try not to get pigeon holed with what I listen to.
4) What’s the proudest moment to date for you as an artist?
Wow, tough question. I’d probably say when I release music, particularly albums. Getting to share what you’ve spent months, sometimes years creating with your audience is one of the best things about being a musician. That, or the release of my sci-fi hip hop b-movie with film makers Truw Media. That was easily the biggest art project of my life so far and took a great number of people believing in me and pulling together to complete.
5) Do you have any advice for our readers who maybe trying to play the mad game of music?
Don’t have false hopes. If you’re going into music for a ‘career’ or to make a living, don’t bother because those who do are few and far between. I’d say find where your passion really lies and make the art you want to, beacuse you have a drive to do so and not because you want fame or fortune. Oh, and always speak from the heart.
6) Name 3 people you would love to work with and why?
It’s hard to narrow it down to just three and I’m lucky enough to work with some of my favourite producers, DJs and vocalists already. Three off the top of my head: from the US – Aesop Rock, UK – Skitz, and i’d love to do a tune with Asian Dub Foundation.
7) What have you got planned for the not so distant future?
I have several EP’s i’m working on already this year with different projects. Watch out for new music from The Magik Word with producer Merlin and The Paragraph Pirates with MC Asbest The Moor King. I’m also working on a solo bass-hop EP with beats produced by Dusty Showbiz which is going to feature some great vocalists. I’m sure there’ll be something new from Broken Authors too. I also have some very special collaborations in the pipeline, but that’s all top secret at the moment!
8) What’s the album you’ve played more than any other?
Another toughy. If i’m completely honest it’s probably one of the albums I used to listen to as a teenager when i owned a lot less music! As far as UK hip-hop goes, i’d say Senser – Stacked Up is something that will never get old to my ears, or maybe Skitz – Countryman. Lately it’s been probably been Chrome and Illinspired, Killa Instinct and Professor Elemental’s latest albums.
9) What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? And where?
Man, that’s just unfair. Do you have any idea how many I have to choose from!? Ok, sticking to hip hop and recent years, just off the top of my head – Jurassic 5 at Paradiso in Amsterdam for obvious reasons. Also – Arrested Development, KRS One, Public Enemy and Breakastra ft Chali 2na have all put on a hell of a show in Brighton in the last few years too. We’re treated to a lot of good acts here. None hip hop, ADF always tear a place up. I saw John Cooper Clark last year who was amazing too.
10) Name 3 things you can’t live without?
Easy – My lady. Music. Food. (And ‘air’!)
Lastly, can you nominate another contestant and provide us with a question for them on your behalf?
Leon Calder, he runs UndergroundHH.com who I write UK hip-hop articles and reviews for. I’d ask – “If you weren’t running the site, what would you rather be – An MC, a DJ or a graffiti artist, and why?”
Any last words/shoutouts?
Gotta shout out my producers Tones, Merlin, Dabeat/Forin Valves, Dusty Showbiz (of Planet Of The Fakes), Ot4ku, SystemATA etc etc. Without their skill and passion I simply couldn’t do what I do.
Thanks Wordplay! Keep up the good work.
