10 Questions: Summer Pearl

Hello again! We are back with another edition of 10 Questions, meeting some wonderful artists who chat to us about their music, motivation and imminent plans. This time round we have the incredibly gifted London based songstress Summer Pearl:

1. Contestant, what’s your name, chosen craft and where are you based?
My name is Summer Pearl, I’m an artist from North-West London, but I live in South-East London.

2. How would you describe your sound?
Ermmm.. Always a hard question. I think it depends on where you see me play or what you’ve heard. I love Jazz and Soul; I incorporate that into my vocal. When I can’t think of dope melodies, I speak them (some may say rap)- so hip hop’s in there. I love reggae and blues also—All of that, I guess.

3. Who / what do you consider to be the biggest influence on your music?
Vocally, I love Ella Fitzgerald & Amy Winehouse, lyrically, hands down, Erykah Badu and all round vibe I’m a fanatic of Bob Marley. To name only a small few.

4. What’s the proudest moment to date for you as an artist?
Creating these projects that are about to come out. I kind of got in to a bit of doubt, in terms of getting things out. Things were always ready, but not quite right. I met Alma (producer) at a jam early this year and we just got straight into it; literally a new song or 2 every session. I think there was a lot in me that I needed to say and it just came right out. Its still coming.

5. Do you have any advice for our readers who maybe trying to play the mad game of music?
No. I think its different for every single person doing this. Everyone is on their on journey, everyone has to make mistakes and learn from them- but I don’t really know anyone else’s journey, their life etc. Its not even all about believing in yourself you know- I’ve written some dooope tunes when in doubt, so I don’t know. Sorry.

6. Name 3 people you would love to work with and why?

  • Erykah Badu before anyone. Her music is timeless. I’ve always been intrigued by her.

  • Chronixx, his everything is just sick. My dad introduced me to his music in the car. (We have sing- a- longs) And it was an instant “YES!”. And then I saw him play live and I just thought, this breddah is a King.

  • Sampa the Great cos she’s boss lady.

7. What have you got planned for the not so distant future?
A lot actually. Gonna drop this EP! – “Only Child”, out 12th September. Gonna drop some visuals, gonna drop a few collabs and a lot more droppin. Just droppin really aha. Creating, learning.

 8. What’s the album you’ve played more than any other?
Ah, its a toss up between “Baduizm” and “Rastaman Vibration”. You can’t test me on those albums aha. Engraved.

 9. What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? And where?
There are too many for waaaay too many reasons.

10) Name 3 things you can’t live without?
My mind, my body and my soul.

Please can you nominate another contestant and provide us with a question for them on your behalf?
Eerf Evil. Why you so dope?

Any last words/ shout outs?
My next show is at Grow, Hackney. Friday 6th September. Root 73 Presents: The next stop.

Excited for this one, playing alongside some fire artists; Natty Wylah, Sarah Isabella, Enny, Louis The Hippie, Jungle Gang and Eerf. It’s gonna be mad. Make sure you’re there. I’ll be playing my whole EP.

I also want to big up all the dope unsigned artists out there, who know that their fucking sick and keep doing it for the love and nothing else.

I wrote P.G.S. (Pretty Girl Sound) for a reason and I hope people comprehend.

I want to shout out Alma- (my real, Colombian G), GeeJay, Levi, Teshay Makeda, Holly Roxanne, Nakira and all the rest.

And that’s all folks! Check out the amazing Summer Pearl on any of her socials below. We’ll be back again soon for another 10 questions!:
