10 Questions: Meisterbeatz (Swiss beatmaker)
Yes yes y’all. We’re back at it again with another round of 10 Questions, and this time we’re taking it to Switzerland, with the super heavy hitting boom bap producer Meisterbeatz. He’s worked with the likes of Swiss rap legends Seven, Baze, Black Tiger and Wurzel 5 to name a few, and has just dropped the gem that is “Beatronaut” which is available on vinyl and digitally now. Let’s do this…
1) Contestant, what’s your name, chosen craft and where are you based?
My name is Meisterbeatz, I'm a beatmaker from Berne, Switzerland.
2) How would you describe your sound?
It's 90's and Detroit infused hip hop with soulful and electronic vibes.
3) Who / what do you consider to be the biggest influence on your music?
Funk: Roy Ayers. Brasilian: Azymuth. Hip Hop: DJ Premier & J Dilla. Equipment: analogue synths. Books and movies: Science Fiction
4) What’s the proudest moment to date for you as an artist?
Holding my first ever solo vinyl in my hands (December 2019) after producing music with or for other artists since the mid-90ies.
5) Do you have any advice for our readers who maybe trying to play the mad game of music?
Recognize the fact that the whole release and promo work takes up at least as much time and energy as creating the music itself. Have an exact idea of what you want to do. Make a plan several months ahead of the release and go step by step. Build up a team of people helping you with the project. Believe in yourself and keep going.
6) Name 3 people you would love to work with and why?
- Phonté: He is so down to earth and has this great voice, I just love him.
- Masta Ace: I know him since my humble beginnings in the early 90ies and always admired his straight-forward and very styleful approach. To me, he represents pure realness.
- Talib Kweli: his intelligent and deep lyrics have always amazed me, as well as his unique flow and his activist's state of mind. Would be great to enhance the world with some more "conscious shit for all the children..." (quote from "Manifesto")
7) What have you got planned for the not so distant future?
I'm producing new music for Burni Aman's 2020 album. She's on the Beatronaut EP, together with Jean Grae. We have a dope and still secret US feature on one of the tracks. Furthermore, me and DJ Turntill made a song with Sadat X and El da Sensei which is also due for 2020. Besides that, I will be working on some new EP material.
8) What’s the album you’ve played more than any other?
Khruangbin's "Con Todo El Mundo". I discovered them in early 2019 and immediately fell in love. It all comes together in their music.
9) What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? And where?
EPMD in Geneva/Switzerland, somewhere in the late 90's. Eric Sermon, Parrish Smith and DJ Scratch inspired us to invest harder and "compose" live-shows onto another level. Kings.
10) Name 3 things you can’t live without?
Beatmaking, chocolates and sneakers...
Please can you nominate another contestant and provide us with a question for them on your behalf?
The Beautiful Now (thebeautifulnow.bandcamp.com): Would you rather produce your next EP in a beatmaking-style (say like Dam-Funk) or - you being musicians - with a focus on played-in instruments (say like Kamaal Williams) - and why?
Any last words/shoutouts?
Music is the key. Be aware and humble. Shoutout to Ty, Lekan100, DJ Style, Freestyle (ex-Arsonists) and Burni Aman.
Your host for today’s 10q’s has been Vice beats
