In just a few short years, the explosive horn-and-percussion trio Moon Hooch—Mike Wilbur (horns), Wenzl McGowen (horns), and James Muschler (drums)—have taken their exhilarating collision of virtuosic jazz, experimental funk, and pulse-pounding electronic dance music from busking on the New York City subway platforms to stages around the world. We spoke to James ahead of their show at Koko, Camden on 9th July. Their latest EP Light It Up is out now.

Contestant, what’s your name, chosen craft and where are you based?

My name is James Muschler. I am a musician based nowhere in particular since 2015, but I used to live in Brooklyn. 

How would you describe your sound?
In Moon Hooch, the sound is a blend of saxophones and drums playing intense dance music, drum and bass, dubstep, and techno, with elements of electronic music. 

Who / what do you consider to be the biggest influence on your music?
John Coltrane is our collective musical hero. He influenced all of us a lot. 

What’s the proudest moment to date for you as an artist?
The end of a long tour feels satisfying and gratifying.

Do you have any advice for our readers who maybe trying to play the mad game of music?
Have fun! 

Name 3 people you would love to work with and why?
Vulfpeck - this band is the funkiest and coolest band out there! I know one of the members from elementary school.
Death grips - this duo sometimes trio is manifesting some awesome space time-shattering music and they are just amazing musicians.

What have you got planned for the not so distant future?
We’re getting a bunch of new material sorted.. were actually rehearsing at the moment. 

What’s the album you’ve played more than any other?
John Coltrane - One Up, One Down (Live at the Half Note)

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? And where?
It was Tyshawn Sorey playing solo at The Stone in New York City.
