Billy Whizz Interview
So tell me, how did it all begin? What got you into making beats and what sparked your love for hip hop?
Well I always liked a lot of music growing up mainly hip hop, metal and hardcore. But it really started when my sister gave me Red Hot Chili Peppers “Blood Sugar Sex Magic” when I was 10, then Rage Against The Machines first album on tape haha, they had funk and rap elements in so I loved that vibe. When I was 11 Eminem’s Slim Shady LP came out and that opened me up to Dr Dre, Royce Da 5’9 and others, then my tastes changed to liking Cypress Hill, and other groups but when I heard “Full Clip” by Gangstarr and thought “Ok that’s some cool shit” and I just wanted to make beats that sounded like that.
Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
Influences are other producers to be fair and they differ at different ages, ones as a kid are like DJ Premier, DJ Shadow, Dr Dre, Mark B, DJ Muggs, Daz Dilinger, then I got older and got more into J Dilla, Necro, Stoupe, and Harry Fraud. Hardcore music influences me a lot, Madball, Crown Of Thornz, Skarhead, Merauder. The way they come with mad energy and the lyrics are similar to rap. In fact, musicians influence me too, Victor Wooten, Jimi Hendrix, Flea, Terry Reid, Muddy Waters. I’ll stop there haha. In the future though, I am looking at new talent that I rate like TK (Tkor.Stretch) whose a drill MC from Bristol. I highly rate Illaman and Juganaut so I’d love to do something with them. I’d love to get Harry Shotta on a track. I’ve been speaking with others so I wont reveal too much but hopefully you’ll hear me collab with heavyweights in UK Hip Hop. Other than that I’m happy enough doing tunes with my mates, Wish, Twizzy, Jinx, G00SE for example.
Now you have been on the scene for a long time and I always see you on the (excuse the pun) bill, for loads of big events, but where did it all start for you? What were the original gigs that started to put you on the map?
First of all, thanks! Haha it all began in Worcester, playing in bands! I was the bassist in a hip hop group called New Age Classics, we were just friends messing about, during that time I started making beats and composing full songs. Not long after I’d moved into my mate Gee’s house, DJ Geenius who was THE guy because he DJ’ed for another local group called The Skillz and was a sick turntablist. He sold me his old decks, his records, and gave me a load of tips. After playing in Mode, Evolution and Velvet Lounge in Worcester mainly with LT and Flowdacia as Lost Fam then I made my way to your club, The Jailhouse in Hereford for my first residency on your Juicy 100% Hip Hop nights. That was where we supported acts from Rodney P & Skitz, London Zoo and a several others.
When it comes to making beats, what is your preferred program and hardware that you like to use?
I use Maschine and Logic to mix, used to be Pro Tools.
You spent several years as the DJ for Three Headed Beast, Twizzy & Jinx are both top lads, what was it like gigging with them and what is one of your top memories from your time with them?
It was and is still great man! All those guys are my brothers, they 100% helped me grow as a DJ and a performer. I got many memories, supporting DJ Yella, meeting Dilated Peoples upsetting Hughey Morgan, loads of fun haha. I’m producing a new album with Twizzy & Jinxsta as well which is sounding great so far, great guests on it too.
So now you’re the official DJ for Wish Master, how did that come together?
It came together because he’s not only sick but a funny motherfucker haha, nah I knew of Wish and his cousin Ellis (also a rapper from Bris) for a few years and we probably met at a Wordlife event. I ended up being the DJ for Wish at Attic Bar one night, then not long after that I said “Do you have a DJ?” He replied “Nah” I said “You want one?” Haha we became good mates, we like the same rap & grime, and have a similar senses of humor, the rest is history.
You recently supported Ghost Face Killa when he came to Bristol, what was that like and did you get to kick it with the man himself?
Mate that was crazy!!! Sold out show, few people turned up and supported us from the local scene, Twizzy & Jinx and the RLD Records camp. We had Datkid, Glock and Baileys Brown on the set too so the levels were mad. Yeah we met Ghost. He’s a cool guy, gave us his vodka too haha, he was bless. He tore up the show and he showed us love. Top guy.
Now, I’ve been really lucky to have a sneak preview of the project you have coming up with Wish Master, when can we expect to be able to cop it and has it got a name yet, or is it all hush hush at the moment?
Haha nah not quite hush hush… the features are hush hush.. but yeah Whizz & Wish Ltd is coming, hopefully 2021. It’s my favorite project to be involved with cuz we’re both really messing with styles on this project, it’s proper exciting. We’ve done a track on my latest release Kobra Kai Style called “Moves I Make”. Of course Wish has a new project out called The B.U.L.L which is out now and Cold Harbour Tales with Illinformed is waiting ready so keep them eyes peeled.
Thanks for taking the time out to speak with me Billy and the best of luck for the future.
