A musical polymath producing, engineering, writing as well as proficient across 6 instruments, July 7’s recent collaborations with the likes of IAMDDB, Tion Wayne and Sango place him firmly on the taste-maker scale, however with the natural flair of his recent EPs ‘Sweets’ and ‘Chocolate’ racing to over 6M streams putting him into an altogether more remarkable category, already picking up heat across the likes of COMPLEX, HNHH, Beats1 and BBCR1.
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
Growing up around so many different types of cultures and music taught me to act as a sponge from young. Music gave me this sense of nostalgia and curiosity that I couldn't quite lay my finger on.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
So many, I would love to work with Rosalia, Tame Impala, Atjazz. There's only a small few of us working to push the envelope musically.
3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the project during the coronavirus pandemic?
I would say the biggest problem I faced was myself. I definitely got to know myself much more and I had to work much harder to cultivate patience with myself.
4. How would you describe your sound?
I prefer to call my music a feeling rather than a sound. It's a frequency.
5. What’s your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
Performing Wembley Arena was definitely a moment. I daydream about it constantly after not being able to perform for so long!
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
Comparison is the thief of joy, don't compare yourself to anything or anybody. Make sure you operate from inside, try not to react to the outside.
7. Are there any artists on your radar at the moment that we should check out?
I'm a fan of Juicy Bae, she's a dope Spanish artist making waves. Daliwonga is another dope artist from South Africa.
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
Daliwonga and Wizkid's new albums are fire!
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
I'm a part time hippie.
10. Name three things you can't live without when in the studio?
Water, Mood lighting, lots of bass.
