Lady Sanity - Interview

  1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

Being the youngest grand-kid in my family I was forced to watch and listen to a lot of music. Sometimes subconsciously, sometimes whilst trying to fight back and turn MTV Base over to watch cartoons. But I think being exposed to different genres from young by all my older cousins, sister and parents made me form a comfort with music from early.

    2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

Artists like Kano, Wretch, Ghetts, Simz influence me for sure. Artists out of Brum like Leshurr, Dapz OTM, Kofi Stone and Truemendous too.

    3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the project during the corona virus pandemic?

Since last year I’ve been trying to get out of the habit of writing and recording in my own space- I’ve done a few studio and writing sessions with various producers, Delirious, BlueLabBeats, Emmavie, Dj Zinc, edbl and slowly started to feel I was getting into the hang of things. So unfortunately lockdown put a stop to all of that. Also getting inspired was hard- I’m used to being everywhere, performing, meeting new people so that was a big change. But I’m quite lucky as I have a little studio setup at home and was able to finish off quite a lot.

    4. How would you describe your sound?

My sound is quite mixed; I have so many different genres that I listen to and influence me. it really depends but it’s a mix of HipHop, Grime, sometimes Jazz if I’m performing with the band… we’ve even given some songs more of a rock edge live.

    5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

Hard to pick but one would definitely be representing Birmingham in the handover ceremony for the Commonwealth Games 2018 live from Australia… another one that was quite personal when I did a performance & Q&A for a youth centre. One of the girls was so scared to get up and rap to everyone and pulled me to the side. She wanted to show me her lyrics before going up and after a few words - she fully went for it and got the biggest cheer. The smile on her face was everything!

    6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

Try & be a jack of all trades & invest in it! Start building your own studio setup, learn a bit about recording, filming and editing, consistently post on your own channels, invest in your own merch. If this year has taught us anything it’s that sometimes you have to depend on yourself to get things done & to make an income from music- you need to be ready for that.

    7. Are there any artists on your radar at the moment that we should check out?

The Worst Guys & Neone The Wonderer. Definitely looking forward to more music from them, keep an eye out.

    8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

Che Lingo - The Worst Generation, Emil - Ambrosia, Busta Rhymes- Extinction Level Event 2

    9. What do you like to do when you’re not making music?

Before lockdown it would definitely have been spending time with family. Keeping up with all my cousins could be a full-time job in all honesty. But I also enjoy a bit of gaming, exercising, watching anime and the odd Netflix documentary.

    10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

I’m a simple girl. My laptop/and or notepad. I’m always rejigging lyrics around so I need them before getting into the booth.
Comfortable clothes- because who wants to be doing long sessions feeling hella restricted.
And LOT’S of water. I can’t be rationing on just one 1L bottle.
