KIANVSLIFE - Lady Jasper (EP)

Standing out from the crowd bursting onto the scene is KIANVSLIFE with his debut EP Lady Jasper.

Kicking off the EP is, ‘Born a lady’ I can hear the James Brown sample with a hip hop beat laced with sinister vocals. There is almost an ethereal vibe with the vocal approach contrasting the instrumentation used. The lyrics seem sensitive mixed with a sense of holding back on something.

Second track, ‘Sally’ gives us an alternative soul sound, is a great sing along and daydreaming track. Lyrically could be referencing his younger self and Sally gives us self reflection on past lovers come and gone.

Basketball was a huge part of Kian’s life before pursing music. I’m sure other creatives explored other avenues before discovering their own calling. It can be difficult and risky giving up something you still love, but does give you a sense of determination to make your new path work. Featuring Falenci shouting out friends and some of the greats in basketball, with a smooth vocal delivering and lyrics reminiscing the good old days.

If ‘Babygurl’ wasn’t an ode to Prince well… you can tell this was fun to make. This track made me want to get up and dance, but it was cheeky that he only gave us just over 1:30. This is clever because you just rewind it and listen again.

‘Taxi man’ gave me a bit of a Motown feel with the approach of the backing vocals and parts of the instrumentation. However, vocally near to the end gives me ‘Penitentiary Philosophy’ by Erykah Badu vibes, becoming more chaotic demanding our attention on the emotion and imagery of the song.

‘Snakes’ is quite a bluesy sound lyrically elements of discovering who around you is really by your side.

Lyrically Kian is known for using metaphors and keeps you guessing what the content is, allows and inspires the listener to build their own interpretation of the lyrics.
