Jean Dawson - Pixel Bath
Jean Dawson has been a prodigy in the making for a while now. If left field hip hop is your thing then Pixel Bath is probably for you. 24 year-old Dawson used to take trips over the border from native Mexico to California to study in high school and cites a hugely diverse pool of sonic and cultural influences in this release. His music holds true to its generation as it bears all the cynicism of disgruntled millennials coupled with a tireless injection of zoomer energy. Sometimes the record sounds like pop punk, sometimes like indie rock and sometimes like hip hop. It also displays a rainbow of emotion showcasing his vulnerable and relatable nature.
Pixel Bath is far from any idea of a traditional hip hop record. It’s easy to let its glitchy, edgy angst splash out. But for those with a deeper palette if you let it wash over you I believe you’ll find it to be more relaxing and refreshing than expected. ‘Clear Bones’ and ‘Power Freaks’ are definite highlights of the release.
