10 Questions: Miller Blue

Introducing the breakthrough artist Miller Blue, who is bravely throwing together a big mix of soul, electronica and R&B to create dreamy reflective tracks that are the perfect soundtrack to the Summer. Earlier this month he dropped his latest EP Sunflowers and we caught up with him for another 10 Questions…

1. Contestant, what’s your name, chosen craft and where are you based?

I’m Miller Blue. I’m a Producer and Artist based in East London.

2. How would you describe your sound?

Honest modern soul.

3. Who/what do you consider to be the biggest influence on your music?

My dad. I grew up around his collection of synthesisers. Although I didn’t actually learn to play until after I left school, they always fascinated me. I remember being so interested by the sounds they could produce. He’d always take me in to the studio and show me how they all worked. I’d never heard anything of that nature before. So I think that then dripped in to what I listened to and ultimately that then curated my taste for my own decisions when comes to instrumentation.

4. What’s the proudest moment to date for you as an artist?

Having my mum come down to London to watch me play was pretty special. The look on her face while I was performing really hit me. I felt truly proud, of both me and her.

5. Do you have any advice for our readers who maybe trying to play the mad game of music?

Stick to your gut when it comes to your artistic decision and persist. Take it slow and trust yourself. And when it comes to having a team around you it really helps if they’re just as passionate about the music as you are. That way they’ll be there through not only the good times but the bad too.

6. Name 3 people you would love to work with and why?

I really wanna collaborate with UK artists right now. So on that basis it would have to be Alfa Mist, LAUSSE THE CAT & Jay Prince.

Alfa because of the pure honesty he manages to convey through his keys playing. I’d love to combine that with a dry vulnerable vocal. I think it would be beautiful.

LAUSSE because his taste seems impeccable. The musicianship and production choices on his debut project are just so tasty.

Jay Prince as I just love his message. His projects are full of positivity and I just feel we’d have some great conversations. Which often can lead to great music being made.

7. What have you got planned for the not so distant future?

I’ve just started recording and producing my third EP. So a lot of my energy is going to be focused on that, however I also wanna get my first European tour set up once the restrictions are pulled from lockdown. Then it’s album time baby.

8. What’s the album you’ve played more than any other?

Hm, the first two that come to mind are Channel Orange by Frank Ocean and Madvillainy by Madvillain. They were the soundtrack to my life when I first bought them. I found them around the same time so they seem to tie together in my memory.

9. What’s the best concert you’ve been to and where was it?

It’s a toss up between Chet Faker and Flatbush Zombies. Both in Manchester. With Chet I just remember him singing Talk Is Cheap on a Wurlitzer and everyone sang along. It was surreal and very emotional. Whereas with Flatbush it was chaos. So much energy in the room. Everyone was smoking zoots and Flatbush were in the crowd for most of the show. It was a free for all. However I did lose my my late grandad’s watch in a moshpit and I felt guilty for years. I loved that watch.

10. Name three things you can’t live without?

Music, family & my trusty bucket hat.
