10 Questions: Iyamah

We’re back with another round of 10 Questions to get the lowdown on artists that are on our radar. We were lucky enough to get some time with Iyamah who has just dropped her new single Won’t Work – an ode to independence and standing on your own two feet…

1. Contestant, what’s your name, chosen craft and where are you based?

My name’s Iyamah, I’m a singer and I write songs. I perform them too, when we’re not in a pandemic... based in London.

2. How would you describe your sound?

I refer to it as ‘Rootsy Soul’, because it’s a combination of many sounds. I’m definitely a soul singer, but my music is a very inspired by music from around the world, mainly reggae and hip hop.

3. Who/what do you consider to be the biggest influence on your music?

I don’t think it’s just one thing, but a combination of many. I think ultimately having a childhood where I had the freedom to be able to explore my creativity and have role models in my life that inspired me to do what I loved the most. It’s all down to the things I’ve seen, places I’ve been and the people I’ve known/looked up to. The great thing about being creative is that it encourages you to have an open mind, so I’m just grateful for all my experiences, good and bad, and to have found something that allows me to express those things. I give it to those who have come before me, and I hope to leave something for those who come after me.

4. What’s the proudest moment to date for you as an artist?

Probably finishing my project. I put so much into it, more than I’ve ever committed to anything before, from the writing to the recording to the production. I’ve really shown myself how capable I am in many ways and I’m feeling proud of myself!

5. Do you have any advice for our readers who maybe trying to play the mad game of music?

Now is the time to enjoy the process and step forward with whatever you’ve got to offer.. the world needs you! You’ll be challenged with opinions, judgements and expectations but ultimately, all that matters is the journey, not the end goal. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else, there is only one you. Being an artist means you can create your own way, in your own time.

6. Name 3 people you would love to work with and why?

I’d love to work with Chronixx, I’ve always loved his songs especially recently ‘Eternal Light’ with The Free Nationals. Or Damien Marley!

7. What have you got planned for the not so distant future?

I’m just excited to be releasing more music. Feels like I’ve been hoarding it all for a while so it’s going to feel like a big step getting this second project out. Due to having no gigs I’ve got more time to write and record more music, so although I’m missing live more than anything, I’m going to really make sure I use this time on in my craft so when venues open up again... BOOM!

8. What’s the album you’ve played more than any other?

When I was young I’d say Beyoncés album ‘Bday’, but more in my recent years probably Lauryn Hill’s MTV Unplugged, to be honest! It’s so raw.

9. What’s the best concert you’ve been to and where was it?

It would still be Masego when I supported him in Paris at Le Trianon. That was surreal, the people and the place.

10. Name three things you can’t live without?

A bath, honey & lemon tea and my plants.
