DEJA - Like That (Single) + 10 Questions

Quickly climbing her way up the ranks of unapologetically bold, female-fronted music, DEJA delivers yet another head-turning, body-rolling single in the form of “Like That”.

Immediately drawing you in with its bouncy production and the sultry lick of DEJA’s vocals, the track lends itself as a metaphorical middle finger to any man who has fooled around and a helping hand up to any female who has had to experience that. Displaying sheer versatility and her innate musicality, DEJA exercises her ability to switch from a slow-tempo R&B track to a fiery Pop based anthem for the ladies in just one click of her zero-tolerance-taking fingers.

Speaking on the track, DEJA explains; “Ever been dating someone and they start moving a bit stoopid? That’s what ‘Like That’ is about. This song is for when you ditch that deadbeat, put on your sexiest outfit and show your ex what they’re missing. I’m not one to get too deep with feelings so ‘Like That’ is playful. Nostalgia from an old nursery rhyme served with that DEJA attitude.”

Bringing to life the sentiment of the track is the visualiser for “Like That”, again another display of DEJA’s bold yet highly infectious personality, speaking on its inspiration…

“POV: you’re on a night out with me, DEJA. I wanted this video to be an accurate reflection of how I get over a wasteman. Heels on, legs out, drinks pouring and booty bussin’.”

DEJA sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infmaous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

Family. I come from a family of legit music enthusiasts. I can’t tell you how many tapes, records and CD’s my sister, mother and father kept! When it came to writing though, my sister’s the one to blame for my obsession. I have memories of her recording her beautiful original songs on our family tape recorder. She’d teach me harmonies that I’d attempt to hold down. Looking back, I realise she’s a big reason why making music comes so naturally to me now.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

Growing up I was most influenced by the powerhouses my sister and mother played around me. Miss. Houston, Beyonce, Christina. I used to sit and mimic their runs and performance. I knew they were the best and I wanted to be better! The audacity of me haha. These days I’m still listening to these queens and more. I’d love to work with Doja Cat. I think she’s hilarious and naturally we’d go brazy on a track together. I’m really feeling Flo Milli at the moment too. Tinsashe, JUICE MENACE, Ms. Banks. The list is endless really.

3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the corona virus pandemic?

Aside from being on stage, my fave thing to do as an artist is work on visuals. During lockdown my team and I were separated which of course stopped us from putting together shoots. This is really hard for me. Luckily though everything else for DEJA continued. I worked remotely with my producer and we kept making music. Obviously live shows took a hit too but at that time, I was far more concerned with making and releasing music than performing it.

4. How would you describe your sound?

Girly, sexy, bold and brazy.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

I’m most proud and humbled by fan messages. I get them everyday and I take time to read every single one. They make it all feel worth it.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

Do what feels right and stick by your decisions. For me personally, there’s nothing worse than having something go out that you aren’t 100 with. At the same time, we build a team around us to compensate for the things we can’t do alone so listen to your people.

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

I just came across boss ass b Jenay Faith. She cool asf.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

Don’t judge me. The “Glitter” soundtrack. For those who don’t know, Glitter was a Mariah Carey movie from early 2000’s. I loved the songs and honey, I be looping that ish - talk about a throwback!

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

Dance training, gym workouts, sauna, steam room and massages!

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

Hot drinks, good energy, Corey K.
