Delia Dane - Proof (Single) + 10 Questions

With her effortlessly cool and fresh vocals, the self-pennedProof’ sees Delia Dane addressing and reflecting on her own personal relationship heartbreak. With the catchy and smooth production, the track is undeniable in creating a groove to transport you to the LA hills at sunset as well as hitting you emotionally with Delia’s soul-baring lyrics.

Speaking on the track, Delia Dane said; “‘Proof’ is about wanting someone so badly to commit to you, but then realising it will likely never happen. It’s the feeling of putting yourself out there but feelings aren’t reciprocated and then dealing with the aftermath of showing your heart on your sleeve a bit too much. I’m infinitely proud of how vulnerable I was able to be on this song.”

Delia Dane is set to leave her mark on the nu disco and pop genre, with vibrant, feminine vocals layered throughout queer song themes. The artist, formerly known as DVWEZ has worked with Kitsuné Musique on her 2021 releases.

Now ready to put her message at the forefront, Delia Dane creates music from her perspective as a black, queer woman, drawing from her own experiences with love and navigating the world. Whilst carrying the vibrant and smooth sounds of pop and nu disco, Delia’s honest lyrics are ready to inspire listeners to be vulnerable, to be angry, to be bold and to be unabashedly happy.

Delia Dane sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

I started playing piano around 7, but it wasn’t until I learned how to play guitar around 11 that I started writing songs. It just came very naturally to me. When I graduated college in 2015 is when it became more serious to me. (My friend Tim was a huge inspiration and changed my life by introducing me to production and Logic Pro X).

I think once you experience the high of creating something magical from absolutely nothing, it becomes addicting. It’s so therapeutic.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

Production wise - SG Lewis and Kaytranada hands down. I’m also really inspired by Tayla Parx and Sarah Aarons. They’re both incredible songwriters.

3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the corona virus pandemic?

I think the pandemic actually allowed me more time to focus and recreate myself sonically. I was working remotely and quarantined in Florida, where my good friend and co-collaborator (Brinson Swann) lives. We were able to lock in and create a lot of music that I’m very proud of.

4. How would you describe your sound?

It can feel like laying in a soft bed with fresh, crisp sheets, or driving through the hills at sunset, but it can also feel like staying up ‘til 6 am in NYC with your best friend.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

Playing SXSW was a major moment and I always think about that experience very fondly. I’m also really proud of this year -- being able to release a lot of music that I feel completely reflects the artist I am. It has been so rewarding.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

Be patient and just make good tunes. It can be a marathon, so you have to be in love with the journey. Try your best not to compare your story to someone else’s.

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

My friends are making some really good music right now. Check out ALETNA and Supertaste.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

Hope For Sale - Chiiild

Floating While Dreaming II - Pell

Habits - Maeta

Remi Wolf - We Love Dogs!

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

I work at one of your favourite social media companies when I’m not making music. I’m honestly a big tech nerd. But my favourite things to do outside of writing and producing, is eating and exploring my sense of style. In 2020 I really got into fashion and how I can better express myself through clothes. I’m also a Taurus, so food is everything to me.

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

Coffee (I’m an addict). My phone. I keep all my lyrics in my notes and my melodies within voice notes. A piano or midi keyboard.
