Eden Rain - Sugar Baby (Single) + 10 Questions
Fresh from making her live debut in her hometown at Live At Leeds, newcomer Eden Rain continues to stand out as one of the brightest new lights on the UK scene with the reveal of razor sharp new single, Sugar Baby. Produced by Benji Gibson, the track showcases Eden’s stand out vocals and stellar songwriting as she sings about the sugar baby dating dynamic in a unique way.
Speaking on the release, Eden states: Sugar Baby was written after listening to a friend’s experiences of being a sugar baby and dating for money. It’s an eye opening world that I observed for a while. I wanted to play with the phrase ‘fuck bitches get money’ and turn it into something where the women are in control, especially in this situation the women are often perceived to be ‘fucked up’ but my friend sees herself as taking control of her own life and the situation she is in. I still definitely worry about my friend and want her to be safe and happy, especially as these relationships have a unique dynamic, so I wanted that to come across in the verses of the song, while the chorus is her saying yes girl! get that money ! fuck the patriarchy!
Eden sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
My love for music was initially sparked by my parents- My mum is an amazing singer and used to sing ’ Eden rain’ to the tune of ‘purple rain’ when I was a baby and my dad used to play ‘gangstas paradise’ on the way to school REALLY loudly with the windows open so I would rap along.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
God this is a tricky one - I’ve been listening to SO much BANKS lately, also totally obsessed with Doja Cat and I’m really into Keaton Henson and how he’s combined his poetry and artwork and music which is something I’m trying to create with my own music. I really do get super weird around people I really admire though so that might have to be a hurdle I overcome before I get in a studio with anyone haha.
3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the corona virus pandemic?
I love my bed and so it essentially turned into my studio, my kitchen, my social hub for a year when I couldn’t go outside. Whilst it was fun for me it makes it harder to get back into the real world now things have opened back up! Also as no one could go anywhere I didn’t have anyone else’s juicy drama to capitalise off and write songs about.
4. How would you describe your sound?
Arghhh this is an impossible question cause I think my sound is constantly changing but Id like to hope its like classic carol king songwriting put in a blender with some soul, trip hop, some frank ocean lyrics, some indie folk, some pop and whatever music I am listening on the way to the studio before I write! I really wanna feel like I have my own sound and not trying to be the next someone else but the first me. I wanna make music that can be a soundtrack to either the best or the worst day of someone’s life.
5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
The first time someone heard my song in Tesco!! That was so cool! I go to Tesco every day! The idea that my songs was the soundtrack to someone buying a meal deal made me happy in a way I can’t really explain. Also playing music I love that I made to my parents and my friends makes my heart feel really good.
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
Live, laugh, love xo (And work with people you trust and who make the time to understand you).
7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?
Nina cobham, Carol Ades, Jensen McRae, Leith Ross, Issey Cross and Ray Laurel write really good songs and are taking up a lot of space in my brain right now.
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
I listen to Carrie and Lowell by Sufjan Stevens and the Featherstone EP by The Paper Kites every night to get to sleep and have done since I was 16!!
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
Play with my pet rats, make bad clay sculptures with my housemates, draw doodles, draw couples on the tube, and their conversations and eat baked beans from the tin.
10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?
1. Crisps
2. Backup packet of crisps
3. My notebook
