kid apollo - 3 star hotel escape (Single) + 10 Questions

Brixton, London based trio kid apollo release their brooding second single "3 star hotel escape." and announce their debut EP 'all i think about' – out November 10th via Sweat Entertainment.

Consisting of singer and producer Jimmy HM and twin brothers (and producers) Felix and Theo Ratigan, the trio combine to create visceral, introspective songs; tackling day-to-day life as teenagers in London, relationships, and the darker side of London's nightlife – delivered through a lens of soothing lo-fi R&B.

Written and produced by the band themselves, "3 star hotel escape." is the second track to be heard from the band's debut EP 'all i think about' – following lead single "let go of things i said" which received early support from The Line Of Best Fit, Noctis Magazine, Fashionably Early, District Magazine and Spotify's Fresh Finds: The Wave playlist.

Speaking on the release of the new track, singer Jimmy HM said: "'3 star hotel escape.' focuses on how you can get so caught up in different situations that just aren’t worth your time. The only real way for you to move on is to remove yourself from all of these issues, whether that be physically or emotionally. This allows yourself to realise that change is forever inevitable and it should be that way."

Centred around a mellow guitar riff – acting as the only constant in direct contrast to the song's lyrics, frontman Jimmy neatly moves between his delicate singing voice and captivating spoken word, atop a bed of soft keys, synthesised strings and shuffling beats.

kid apollo sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

Jimmy: Well I met Theo and Felix pretty young, at the start of secondary school but we didn’t really make music together until we were 15. They’re twins so I sort of had to take them both or get neither 😂. We just hung out pretty much every weekend from then on, mainly listening to UK hip-hop and from there we just started making our own shit.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

Choker, Brandon and BERWYN, just to name a few.

3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the coronavirus pandemic?

We actually found it a very good time to lock in and really establish where we wanted our sound to settle. The main drawback was not really seeing all of our people and not going out as much as those late nights were often what fed our inspiration.

4. How would you describe your sound?

It varies a lot but we mainly draw from R&B and hip-hop. We’d maybe call it chill-hop if we were to put a label on it.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

Just seeing the level of support from new fans is probably what has excited us most. We’re obviously right at the start of our journey, so are just excited to see what’s to come really.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

Don’t listen to what anyone else has to say.

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

dexter

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

Circles - Mac Miller, Tape 2/Fomalhaut - BERWYN

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

Going out to see friends is mostly what we get up to but other than that, we are into our fashion as we’re really starting to see some of the sick London streetwear brands that we’ve been preeing starting to take off as of late.

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

Tesco meal deal, hard drive and a fan.
