In 2021 he released EP ‘All Is True’ with features from Childish Major and Taylor Hill and production from Grammy winner Street Symphony of Track or Die (known for Nipsey Hussle’s ‘Hussle & Motivate’) which includes his latest track release in ‘Andale’ which is on the Kiss Fresh playlist in the UK and has also received plays on The Beat London, Radio 2 Funky and Unity.
The EP blurs the boundaries between Christian music and larger than life hip hop, delivering universal songs about faith, family, and fidelity. This is hip hop with heart, mixing the spirituality of Sunday morning with the energy of Saturday night.
Steven Malcolm sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
I think what really sparked my love for music is in 2009, I was living in a house with a bunch of older street brothers. We had a studio in the basement and a friend of my name Flamez taught me how to record and engineer myself.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
Travis Scott is my biggest musical inspiration. Not that I try to tailor my sound like him, but his creativity and live show inspires me the most! Big Sean is the next one, plus both being from Michigan, I really hope to work with him in the future. I’ve always wanted to work with a Marley as well. May be in Jamaica, that would be legendary.
3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the corona virus pandemic?
I was not inspired at all during the pandemic. I only wrote a couple verses for songs that I was forced to do LOL. My favourite part of the artistry is live performance. So me not going out means me not being able to be inspired. It was a struggle but having my son help me break through that.
4. How would you describe your sound?
My sound is very diverse. I’m not artist who can tap into any type of genre and kill it. My favourite is conscious hip-hop, hard-hitting hip-hop that impacts and has a message.
5. What’s your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
My proudest moment today as an artist is probably staying the course. My career continues to increase and the growth is evident each and every year. Just continuing to grow is my proudest moment.
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
Stay dedicated to the craft, and obedient to God. Be the hardest worker in the room! And always be a student. It’s not easy but if you stay the course and surround yourself with the right team and people you will do just fine.
7. Are there any artists on your radar at the moment that we should check out?
Zay Jones, Porsha Love, and this album I’m about to drop January!!! Lol.
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
Definitely the J. Cole and Nas album heavy. Also Andy Mineo’s new album Neverland two is insane.
9. What do you like to do when you’re not making music?
I love to spend time with my family. Do things with them, hit the movies with my wife, and I’m always in the gym Boxing.
10. Name Three things you can’t live without when in the studio?
Amazing beats, a comfortable vibe with low lights and candles, and a glass of wine.
