Cj Pandit - Boyfriend (Official Video) + 10 Questions

After a long and winding pandemic, Cj Pandit has been making every moment count.

He kicked off this year with inclusion in The NME’s 100 emerging artists tipped for 2021 and went on to release his debut EP ‘Just Before You Disappear’ back in May. Now he's back and he's kicking the door down with a new single to blast you straight into 2022.

Squelchy bass, soaring vocals and exquisite songwriting make ‘BoyfriendCj Pandit’s biggest moment yet. Playful and groove laden, it’s a flawless next move for this exciting, rising artist. Sharing a little more, Pandit explained: “Through the whole process of writing these songs, I wanted to embrace imagined personas, build scenarios and ask questions in my head that we could then leap from.

For Boyfriend, it was what would happen if Prince, Bowie and Peter Gabriel all got fucked up and wrote a song together. And every time something would make us laugh, or question whether we were pushing things too far, we dialled them up more. I wanted to embrace the outrageous ways of performing, the escapism of the wild nights we’re all getting back to.

Cj sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
I remember hearing Talk Talk’s record the colour of spring for the first time after being obsessed with bands for years and years, that was the one record that kinda moved the dial for me from being a fan to wanting to create music of my own. The idea that you could build a whole world around sounds was so fascinating to me.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

I’d  love to work with Dijon, i really fuck with him. Christine and the Queens is my dream collaborator though. One day…

3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the coronavirus pandemic?

I mean, it was tough for everyone, but i think the time away from people and the world did me some good. I really had a look at what i was doing and why i was doing it and was lucky enough to have the chance to really realign my process. The obvious thing was no live shows as i think they matter the most to me and to most artists. Human Connection!

4. How would you describe your sound?

Real Life! Suspended chords and a whole different groove. I grew up with a house full of 00’s Pop music and 80’s ballads, so i think you throw all of those together it ends up as what you guys all hear now.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

I think selling out my first hometown show. To know you’ve got your hometown behind you is such an amazing feeling. LC to the world!

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

Stay true to whatever it is that gets you excited to create. Disregard external influence and work with people that you don’t have to explain yourself to.

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

Mollie Coddled, she’s so sick. So exciting. I think Sfven is doing some really really cool things atm too. Geniuses!

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

Latest War on Drugs, All the new Charli XCX singles, And I’ve gone into a little Bon Iver spiral recently, Autumn and all that….

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

Cook run and read. The holy trinity. (and party with my friends).

10. Name three things you can't live without when in the studio?

An upright piano, my notebooks and way too many lamps, can’t have the big light on to make pop music.
