Tahn Solo - Tortoise Territory (EP)

Tahn Solo is a neo-soul artist from South East London, drawing comparisons to the likes of Frank Ocean and SiR, he describes himself as a “spell caster”.

The first track “(establishing) Territory” a beautiful atmospheric introduction short and sweet, giving us a taster for the rest of the EP.

Moving on to the next track “Joyride” a stunning neo-soul track with a hint of a lo-fi feel. I can imagine a smoky room with everyone wearing tinted glasses, nodding their heads slow. Then switching to a old chevrolet moving in slow-mo. I believe he is singing about being fine in his own world and then someone coming in and disrupting his peace and thinking they are entitled to do so. Now they are dancing around in a situationship.

LIAR/LIAR has some interesting soundscapes and has a timeless dark-soul feel. The chorus catchy and memorable and the play on words is very clever.

”Quantum Sea”
has a uptempo feel leaning towards a lo-fi, chill-hop realm. The flow is different intricately placing complex words in his lyrics that are unexpected. Showing another side of this talented soul.

The EP ends on ‘Rumour’ a mixture of dark-soul, lofi-fi and chill-hop. I remember having this on repeat when it came out, such a smooth track. My favourite lyrics would have to be ‘Victories all in the timing’ it just shows that as at artist if you are uncertain with your hiatus, sometimes waiting isn’t a bad thing. Tahn took his time and has created this wondrous piece of art, and yes, yes I will wait ever so patiently for his next project. Since following his ‘Uncle Fox’ journey myself this was worth the wait.

Coming from a musical background, he started writing songs in his first year at university, where he fronted Brighton band Uncle Fox and released an EP titled “Code Games and Video Names” with the 5-piece. After the band’s disbandment, he released his debut single in 2020, and “Joyride” (Produced by eL Cee) was featured on BBC Introducing in January 2021. He has gone on to provide guest vocals for Doom Cannon at Ronnie Scott’s and release his second single, “The Rumour” (produced by Motion Hyrule) off his forthcoming EP “Tortoise Territory”

Tahn says about his journey “I’ve always been quite withdrawn when it comes to my music and I’ve never been afraid of taking my time in any aspect of life, so referencing the tortoise for the concept of this EP felt like an honest representation of myself. It represents a starting point, creating a space that you feel comfortable in, a foundation in which to grow from and now I get to open up that space a little bit more.”

The EP includes his first single “Joyride” produced by eL Cee (which was also featured on BBC introducing at the top of the year) and “The Rumour” (Produced by Motion Hyrule).

"Welcome to Tortoise Territory. Stay as long as you’d like."

Be sure to follow Tahn Solo for the latest. His music - including Tortoise Territory available to stream now.
