PREMIERE: Amethyst - Up All Night (Single) + 10 Questions
Following the recent release of her debut single “Can’t Let Go”, which received glowing reviews from The Hidden Hits, Bong Mines Entertainment, She Makes Music, WPGM and IndustryMe, as well as being added to Ones to Watch and Alfitude Mag playlist and receiving airplay from Amazing Radio UK and US as well as BBC Introducing, Amethyst has returned to deliver her stunning new single “Up All Night” from her forthcoming debut EP.
Produced by Strama who was behind Amethyst’s first single “Can’t Let Go” the dream duo are bringing us another track which we will have you singing along in seconds. “Up All Night” sees Amethyst delivering more of her smooth, luscious vocals tied in with that catchy and striking R&B production, giving us more hints as to what to expect from her EP, set to be released early next year. Amethyst is feeling like the new face of R&B/Soul with a distinctive style that sets her apart from the rest.
Speaking about the new track Amethyst said, “This song wasn’t actually intended for me. I originally wrote this to a brief for another artist whilst at university. As soon as me and Strama finished the track, we realised it would suit me better as an artist so I decided to keep hold of it and I think I definitely made the right choice. I know many people will have been through this storyline and will connect with the song. For me that’s what makes it so special, because in my head I can just imagine people blasting this song on their speakers and going crazy and I love that.”
Amethyst sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1.So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
I mean my parents really wanted me to learn an instrument so I started learning piano and violin at age 3. But I think when I really fell in love with music was listening to my dad’s cassette tapes on the way to school. It would vary from all types of music from classical to soca, but that’s what I loved as it really helped me appreciate all genres.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
Oh gosh this is so so tough, because there are so many for so many different reasons! I think if we are talking about current influences, I’m a huge huge fan of Yebba and Cleo Sol so to work with them at some point in the future would be a dream come true. But a lot of people don’t know I’m a big jazz fan and I’ve always dreamt of collaborating with Gregory Porter. Children of Zeus are up there as well!
3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the corona virus pandemic?
Money! Furlough was no joke, but also the fact the sessions were either just not happening or were online which made it really hard to connect emotionally to a song. But my first single “Can’t Let Go” came out of the pandemic so there were some positives.
4. How would you describe your sound?
I mean if you were going to categorise it, people would probably say R&B/Soul. But I try and take inspiration from other genres so you might hear some jazz, gospel, funk, Neo-soul, pop all mashed in there.
5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
I think being played on BBC Introducing. It was just such a crazy moment and when I got the email I couldn’t believe it! For someone to believe in my song, let alone my first single was so amazing.
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! I know it’s hard but trust me when you start believing in yourself other people will see that and will believe in you and start to take you more seriously.
7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?
Isabelle Brown! I came across her music on Instagram and I could not believe that voice was coming out of an 18 year old!
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
Allen Stone - Apart, Silk Sonic - An Evening with Silk Sonic, Adele - 30
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
I love to just chill out and watch TV. Binging a good series is something that really just helps me relax, if I need a timeout.
10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?
Peppermint or Lemon & Honey tea. Comfy tracksuits. My phone for the lyrics, cos even though I’ve written the damn song for some reason it never stays in my head!
