Kwoli Black - Call Me When It's Over (EP) + 10 Questions

Kwoli Black arrives with his Brand-New EP ‘Call Me When It’s Over’. This project is an ambitious, experimental attempt to articulate the experience of finding love and losing it. The EP acts as a world-building exercise where Kwoli stars as the main character, Blue. The narrative explores Blue’s romantic relationship with his girlfriend and it’s intricacies as it goes from the honeymoon phase to destruction. Across the six songs the listener experiences love, loss, regret, grief, acceptance and new beginnings.

We sat down with Kwoli for our infamous 10 Questions to find out more:

1. Whew, what sparked my passion for music? I think I’ve always been passionate about it. From since I was knee high you know. My mother and father would play iconic music all over the house growing up. Michael Jackson, Prince, Al Jerreau, Michael McDonald, Ol’ Blue Eyes Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles. I think listening to them gave me a sense of appreciation for artistry and then I fell in love with poetry after watching def poetry jam. Seeing Mos Def, Kanye West and Common rhyming on that stage sparked a real interest for me. I started off as a spoken word artist and then transitioned into music because I really love music itself.

2. I would say currently I am in the alternative hip hop & rnb space. I am quite eclectic but there is that running theme and sound surrounding my music currently.

3. The biggest influence on my music is life herself. Whatever I’m going through, feeling, or experiencing. That’s what inspired me to write. Artistically I look to Drake a lot. Tyler the Creator too. I’m a huge fan of both Westside Boogie and Jaden Smith. They’re dope.

4. Proudest moment so far? Releasing this EP for sure. I’m so so proud of this. It’s like my introduction to the music world and I think I did it very well, if I do say so myself.

5. Advice? Do I even know what I’m doing?! No I’m playing, honestly I think the best advice is be open to learn. Have fun but also take it seriously. This is a career. It’s your career. Nobody is going to make the music for you. Nobody does the press, the marketing, makes the content until you set the motion. You gotta learn, fail and evolve. It sounds daunting but trust me, when it comes to, it is so much fun. Enjoy every moment. You almost have to be like a child learning new things, having that wonder and gleam in your eye when you stumble across a new flow or a new approach to songwriting or producing. Yeah, that’s my advice.

6. 3 people I would love to work with would be Kanye West, Tyler the Creator, Drake.

Kanye is a genius. Point blank period.

Tyler inspires me every day. He’s my motivation at times and I love his appreciation for music. His genuine joy for sound is amazing.

Drake is Drake. The artist of the decade. He’s an influence and an inspiration for me. I think we’d make amazing music! Can I say that? I hope we would haha

7. Hopefully. HOPEFULLY my own headline show will be over the horizon. Let’s see how things pan out.

8. Probably CMWIO! It’s on repeat! Nah I’m playing. Flower Boy - Tyler the Creator. Beautiful project. No skips.

9. Again Tyler. That guy is an artist.

10. My phone, anime/manga, my mother.
