Tali Shear - Painting (Single) + 10 Questions

Singer-songwriter Tali Shear makes a return, but this time taking us on a journey of love and romance with her newest track ‘Painting’. The London based musician enthrals with this mesmerising release and is not one to be missed!

Tali greets us with open arms from the get go, aiming to recreate the feeling of a warm hug, or the feeling when you first realise you’re in love. Her vocals, being described as “the best I’ve heard in recent times” and likened to Adele, are impeccably delivered along side the comforting guitar and violin leads.

Fans, who were lucky enough to grab a preview before its big release have also been relishing the new number with one even claiming they are 'In Love'. It is evident to see why as it comes with and infectious melody, and touching lyrics to match the angelic tone of the track.

Tali sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

Music’s always been a big part of my family and upbringing. My mum used to teach music at my primary school so I’d always sit in her choir lessons before I was allowed to join waiting for the day I could. Once I started singing I pretty much never stopped. I’d do all the choir shows, musical summer camps and music clubs I could. I started teaching myself piano and guitar, and put poems I had written to some chords and realised I really enjoyed the process. So from there my love of song-writing grew and when I started busking I realised that I loved sharing my music just as much. Song-writing and performing just became addictive and something I never want to stop.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

Adele and Tom Odell are two massive influences for me. Their song-writing artistry and their passion for releasing the music they love to write, and not what the labels tell them to, is really inspiring to me. I’d also love to work with Bruno Major, I think song-writing with him would be amazing!

3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the corona virus pandemic?

During the pandemic I released by previous single ‘Fool’. I didn’t struggle too much with the release as I had a lot of time on my hands to reach out to people about my song but I did miss the face-to-face element of talking to people about my song and people able to perform it live. One problem I definitely faced was plucking up the courage to do a live stream, for some reason I was a lot more nervous singing to my phone screen than a crowded room.

4. How would you describe your sound?

I’d say my sound is singer-songwriter, mostly chill pop or ballads but some of my songs have elements of jazz, soul and rock to keep things exciting.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

I was extremely proud of the livestream I did during the pandemic where I raised money for Cancer Research, that was amazing! I’ve also been incredibly proud of all my songs but the top moment for me was weirdly when I sang Hallelujah at one of my recent gigs and had everyone singing along with me. Its the best feeling ever and knowing there are people there having a great time singing along to my sound is so special.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

I have so much advice to give! I’ve started doing ‘What I’ve learnt this month’ posts on Instagram just sharing what I’ve really taken in from the month. At the moment my favourite piece of advice from last month is that everyone’s on their own path, so don’t compare your successes to anyone else’s. Every win is a win whether big or small and that needs to be celebrated!

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

Mathilda Homer, Sebastian Schub and Noah Mac are a couple artists I’ve been listening to recently that I’ve been enjoying.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

My staples are ‘These Streets’ – Paolo Nutini, ‘The Divine Feminine’ – Mac Miller, ‘Wrong Crowd’ – Tom Odell and ‘The New Abnormal’ – The Strokes. I could listen to these any time any day and they’re always on my rotation.

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

I’m a really awful dancer but I love it so much! If there music going I will be moving and I don’t care how embarrassing it is.

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

My guitar, water and my mum. My mum says it straight and will always tell me to rerecord something if its not sounding 100%. She’s the first person to hear my new songs and will always give me an honest review like no one else does.
