Hailing from Osun State, Nigeria, the 26-year-old rapper, singer and songwriter Cheque - real name Akinbi Bamidele Brett - is quickly establishing himself as one to watch. Signing to Penthauze Music in 2019, Cheque has earned his spot in the thriving West African music scene, featuring on Phyno’sDeal With It” album as well as olamide’s999” album last year.

Childhood school friends, Cheque and Fireboy DML reflect on their “History” and how far they’ve come, in their new single out now via EMPIRE. Probing unhealed wounds of previous relationships and darker times, “History” is as much about looking to the future as it is to the past. Recreating a picture taken of the pair back in the day, we fast forward to the present day image (above), where we see two men living out their dreams.

Cheque sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

I started music in my Sophomore year at university. I went over to a friends house who I didn’t know was in to music at the time, but we eventually started battle rapping with each other and I instantly loved it. The more time I spent rapping and coming up with ideas, the more I wanted to get better at it.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

Generally, I listen to a variety of music. My Dad introduced me to some of my earliest influences which were Brian Adams and 50 Cent. When I was old enough to find music for myself, Eminem and Drake became two key influences for me. I would love to work with anybody - as long as the energy is right.

3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the coronavirus pandemic?

The major shock was the lack of performing, but we had to adjust. We had so much time on our hands so we spent a lot of time making music which was cool.

4. How would you describe your sound?

I naturally do R&B, trap, hip-hop but because of my background, I infuse my culture into everything. So, afro-fusion would be the best way of describing my sound.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

When I dropped my first EP ‘Razor’. Considering where I come from and the sacrifices I’ve made and the things I’ve let go of because of music. Knowing that I was dropping something for myself, I was so happy to think i’m finally doing what I want to do!

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

Honestly, advice depends on each individual person but no matter what you do, you have to put 100% effort in to it. Of course, there are distraction around you that will stop you from accomplishing certain things so this is important. You got to do what you go to do, work harder than you could ever imagine and that’s what I do.

7. Are there any artists on your radar at the moment that we should check out?

My friends mainly. Blaqbonez and Fireboy DML who are both artists that I naturally vibe with, which is great. Check them out for sure.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

I’ve been listening to Justin Bieber’s recent album ‘Justice’. I regularly play J Hus’ ‘Big Conspiracy’ too! I always enjoy going back to older Eminem and Drake projects as a good reference and it gives me a sense of nostlagia.

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

I usually stay home when i’m not working. A day off for me usually consists of playing computer games, watching football and watching movies.

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

Firstly, myself.  I have to bring the best version of me to the studio, if i’m not myself then it won’t be a productive session. Secondly, mentos - my favourite studio snack. Finally, games - just to keep me occupied in between work as a little treat.
