Melbourne-based twice-Grammy-nominated Hiatus Kaiyote are making a come back with a bang! Their highly anticipated new album ‘Mood Valiant’ out 25th June has us itching with excitement. From their first album ‘Tawk Tomahawk’ to ‘Choose Your Weapon’ has received adoration from Erkyah Badu, Prince and Questlove. This genre-bending band has gained fans from the hip-hop realm, they have been sampled by the likes of Kendrick Lamar, The Carters, Anderson .Paak and Chance Rapper. The lead vocalist Nai Palm worked with Drake on his 2018 album ‘Scorpion’ and Robert Glasper approached the band to contribute on his album of Miles Davis remake, ‘Everything’s Beautiful’. I make no mistake seeing Hiatus Kaiyote is more than just live performance, I personally saw the band back in 2016 supported by Jordan Rakei. Honestly it was one of the most magical experiences I have been part of and would highly recommend seeing them.
Their latest single ‘Get Sun’ is just the tip of the iceberg. It starts with a count in and ‘woos’ which is perfect because that definitely represents the exact reaction of their fans, knowing there is more music to follow. Followed by a big sound we have all come to know and love from them definitely one to dance in the sun to. Beautifully layered vocals and harmonies from Nai Palm, horn and strings from Arthur Verocai, which has really struck a core I found myself rewinding in disbelief. Sky-rocketing the track out of this world with interesting time signatures and complex rhythms, drawing you in captivating you to join, “Nai Palm” Naomi Saalfield (guitar, vocals), Paul Bender (bass), Simon Mavin (keys), and Perrin Moss (drums). On a mysterious adventure with them, if this is the single then my goodness are we in for a treat.
