BINA. drops her brand new EP “This Is Not a Film”.

Raised in South London, BINA. is an artist who uses a mixture of emotion-provoking, sophisticated lyrics and catchy melodies to detail her life experiences in music. She lays smooth, soulful vocals over alternative r&b beats, creating the perfect blend of r&b, jazz and Neo-soul.

As an emerging artist she has begun to refine her craft and establish herself as an artist to watch, having collaborated with an array of tastemakers in the music and fashion scene, such as Boiler Room, Dr Martens and London Fashion Week.

BINA. sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. What’s your name, chosen craft and where are you based?

My name is BINA. and I’m a singer-songwriter and model from South London.

2. How would you describe your sound?

My sound is best described as a mellow blend of Neo-Soul, Alternative R&B and Jazz, with hip hop influences.

3. Who/what do you consider to be the biggest influence on your music?

The musicians who inspire me the most are Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse and Kenny G - this is the type of music I used to listen to at home with my parents and so it’s the first music I fell in love with. Later on, I discovered Hiatus Kaiyote and IAMDDB - they really helped inspire and shape my current sound. Then of course, my life experiences - from my childhood to love and self-discovery - inspire what I write about.

4. What’s the proudest moment to date for you as an artist?

My proudest moment was when Moonchild shared my cover of their song “Cure”. I absolutely love Moonchild and so them showing me love meant a lot to me.

5. Do you have any advice for our readers who maybe trying to play the mad game of music?

Just start, be consistent, and enjoy the process. Everything will make sense when it’s supposed to.

6. Name 3 people you would love to work with and why?

Moonchild, because I’m in love with Amber’s voice and the production they do is crazy. Blue Lab Beats - a duo from London doing crazy things for the contemporary jazz scene so it would definitely be amazing to create some music with them. And I would love to work with Gaidaa - she’s a singer from Amsterdam. Her vulnerability is inspiring; I’d love to join forces.

7. What have you got planned for the not so distant future?

I plan to collaborate with a LOT more artists. I plan to experiment more and continue to be very vulnerable in my music.

8. What’s the album you’ve played more than any other?

Probably Baduizm. Although Lianne La Havas’ album got rinsed last year, haha. Love her music.

9. What’s the best concert you’ve been to and where was it?

Kendrick Lamar in 2018 was definitely my favourite concert I’ve been to to date. Everything from stage design to his set to his costumes, even having James Blake as his opening act - every aspect of it was mesmerising.

10. Name three things you can’t live without?

Clear lipgloss, my headphones, and water.
