Each track showcases Emir’s careful blend of LA-influenced trap and Turkish instrumentation, moving between woozy R&B sonics and unconventional hip-hop flows.
Speaking about Hoppa pt.2, Emir says
“Hoppa pt.2 is the continuity of part one. For me personally, Hoppa pt.2 was an advanced version of what I created with experimenting and combining influences from different chapters of my life. I wrote some of the tracks in London, some in LA and Istanbul. Musically, it resembles the ground of my music and better defines the space I’m in.
“Music grows with you, so I think pt.2 naturally feels more mature to me. I made some of the tracks in a period of questioning my journey and purpose. It reflects on the music I make and I’m very grateful that I had the chance to make music with my friends again.”
The leading track ‘Katakulli’ comes with a music video with at Back to the Future them and is directed by Quba Tuakli of Caviar (Ghetts, Doja Cat, The Gorillaz).
Filmmaker Quba writes:
“Emir wanted something dark and trippy, having written the song while disillusioned with his environment and desiring to return home (Turkey). It fit with the track and was a great starting point for me - I'm drawn to irreverent narratives about identity and belonging, and when we decided that the video should have an aspect of travel to it, the ideas just kept forming in my head. The resulting video is a descent into frantic delirium ignited by a longing for one's native culture. Said delirium starts off confrontational until the experience becomes something warm and familiar.”
Emir follows: “The lead single “Katakulli” was written when I felt the most fed up of the toxic, selfish environment I was in. When nothing felt real or authentic and there was no reason left to even try trusting anyone. It refers to people I met every day, up to artificial relationships in the music industry. I wrote it about wanting to go back home, taking a deep breath and resting my wings on what’s real. Katakulli’s literal translation is “tricks and games”, it’s a call out to poisonous people.”
