PREMIERE: CW Jones 10 Questions + No Point Complaining (Official Video)
It was 2017 when, chilling in the sunny Marseille in Provence, we first listened to this beat in Suif's Studio.
The French producer (Siska / Watcha Clan) had chopped a 70's Anatolian hit and had turned it into a soul instrumental. We gently moved that diamond onto our hard disk and few months later we sent it to one of the deepest soul voices out there, known by the name of CW Jones.
Incredibly (although it seems a legend it’s actually the truth), CW Jones connected that much with the vibe that he came up with the lyrics in complete freestyle and yes, the first take was the one!
Although we have been listening to this piece for a long time now, every time we play it it's an instant classic, and we're so proud to be able to offer this gem to you, pressed on our most appreciated vinyl format, the 7” inches.
No Point Complaining is out now on all digital platforms and you can cop the limited vinyl in the link. Pressed on high quality black and red vinyl wax (48 gr.). The vinyl comes with stickers in brown recycled paper sleeve. https://littlebeatmore.bandcamp.com/album/no-point-complaining-7-vinyl
CW sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
I’ve always loved music but I got seriously ill when I was about 18 and then spiralled into a pit of drug abuse. It meant I wasn’t able to work a normal job and at that point it seemed like sitting or standing on stage for half an hour made more sense than sitting in an office or on a building site. It was literally the only job I deemed sustainable, couple that with delusions of grandeur and I really pictured myself on the pyramid stage of Glastonbury every night as I went to sleep. It became a bug that I couldn’t shake off. I just had to follow the rabbit down the hole.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
Ray Charles, Joe Cocker, Eric Burden.. just big classic voices from yesteryear.
I’m not really sure who I want to work with, there’s been people I’ve wanted to work with for years and I’ve never been able to make happen so it’s easier to focus on yourself and just make sure I’m doing all the right things for myself.
3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the corona virus pandemic?
None, if anything it’s allowed artists to focus on recording music. Live shows and festivals have always been prioritised for the last 7 years of my career so it’s nice to finally finalise all the loose ends from years of recording.
4. How would you describe your sound?
I’m a blues poet. The music behind it is irrelevant. So I don’t know if it’s have a specific sound, I’m just me, talking about all my problems, in a kind of whiney and optimistic way. I call it Gutter Soul.
5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
Being played on BBC Radio 2 by Dermot O’ Leary on a Saturday afternoon, shout out button eyes. Also recently being play listed on french radio with SLUMB was a great moment. But to be honest, the most proud I’ve been is putting artists on stages in England, Italy and Bulgaria. It’s beyond stressful programming stages and organising acts but it’s worth it when you look back and see how many people you helped.
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
Constantly ask questions.. soak up information like a sponge and try and implement it into your own career.
7. Are there any artists on your radar at the moment that we should check out?
Man I’ve loved watching the progression of bucket-hat jack into sudders. I love to see people grow and find themselves as artists and this guy has a vision. I also manage an artist called Phoenix Laoutaris that you interviewed recently, she’s on the come so check her out!
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
I don’t listen to music much and if I do albums aren’t really played so I’m gunna’ drop some that my girl plays in the house that I really vibe with. Snoh Allegra’s “ugh, those feels again”, Durrand Bernar’s “Dur&” and Anderson .Paak’s “Ventura”... are all fire, check them out!
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
Watching people punch each other in the head, I love watching fighting and it’s important to have interests outside of music to keep you sane. If I wasn’t working in the music industry I’d of loved to been a professional fighter in an alternate universe.
10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?
Electricity, a microphone and a chair to sit down on.
No Point Complaining is out now on all DSP’s.
