Bursting into the scene as early as fourteen as a member of the old school Channel U collective, B.O.M.B Squad, Baba Crunch went on to form one half of hip hop duo PBGR (formally known as Play Broke Get Rich) before finding his own feet and creating music as the solo artist we know him to be today. His creativity and versatility as an ever developing musician has naturally helped him to navigate his way around through various genres, before birthing his own unique blend of Rap and RnB sounds.

Baba Crunch sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

My love for music started as a child. I remember being bored In church as a kid, the only thing that would keep my attention was watching the drummer and keyboardist when it was time for praise & worship around that time I just wanted to learn an instrument.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future? 

I grew up on the isle of dogs which is local to Limehouse and Bow so I feel like a lot of the local mc’s such as  (Wiley, Dizzee & Trim) had a direct influence on me because they were from the same area as me I also grew up during the first wave of Grime so it was normal for for me to take part. Later on when I became more musically inclined I started listening to Nas, Jay z, Ludacris & Pharrell  (The Neptune’s) which I feel all had an influence on me in one way or another. The most recent two artist I can say have had the same impact on me would be Drake and Travis Scott because I feel they have both push the boundaries when it was most vital and brought something new to the table I would love to work with both of those guys in the future.

3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the coronavirus pandemic?

Tbh the only tho if I can think of is the fact I haven’t been able to do live performances which is a shame because I was planning on doing a headline after the release of my E.P Volts other than that I would say there’s a few tracks I have had to hold back from release because I feel they deserve the energy that comes with everyone being outside enjoying themselves the pre-pandemic way I hope we can get to that point soon though.

4. How would you describe your sound?

I would describe my sound as a soulful nostalgic experiment accompanied by trap & 808 drum patterns in more simpler terms (Mixing the old with the new) and hoping for the best.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

I would have to say the release of my E.P Volts  A lot went into it and to see it be received well by the public just reassured me it was all worth it which is all you need sometimes to keep going.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

I would say only get into it if your heart's in it because your gonna be tested lol along the way, try not to let either the wins or loses go to your head and although this may sound cliche just stick at it, keep going there’s going to be days when you make something sick and are really productive and there’s days we’re your not so much either way just show up for the work.

7. Are there any artists on your radar at the moment that we should check out?

I’ve been listening to a guy called Mathaius Young who’s a cold producer/artist and another called Pyrex Whippa who reminds me of a more melodic Future. There’s also a guy Damage from the UK very cold artist and from the same area as me Isle of Dogs.

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

Outside of music I love fashion so I’m always on the hunt for rare pieces and 1 of 1 crep’s. Looking good makes me feel good. if I’m not doing that I enjoy reading because it simulates my mind and you never know when whatever you pick up will come in handy.
