Brighton based modern soul singer-songwriter Scarlett Fae releases a short film and makes her directorial debut for her latest single ‘Black Molasses’.

Let me start by saying I was in tears watching this, it felt intimate, raw, personal but absolutely breathtaking. Deeply rooted in the struggles when you are a woman and also finding it hard to articulate those struggles for fear of judgment. I know this is something internal and external for so many. Also exploring the issues surrounding climate change and the health of our planet earth. Black Molasses is a short film which follows a regular Sunday in the life of G (for Gaia), a 20-something and explores a correlation between her experiences and those of Mother Earth.

A ballad that starts with piano and soulful vocals wading in and out when the chorus kicks in is accompanied with soft harmonies and ad-libs. The ending a bridge for survival as she sings in her higher register and the instruments start to crescendo you can almost feel and see visually the desperation, emotionally charging within the choreography.

Speaking on the film: “For a while, I had felt the visual for ‘Black Molasses’ couldn’t be a ‘standard’ music video if the gravity and personal importance of the track was to be portrayed on screen. After getting some initial support on the idea to create a short, I thought about how to parallel the feeling in it with the lyrical content and ended up with Gaia. She became a character that was an amalgamation of parts of myself and of my closest friends. Hopefully, women who are Black/mixed, queer and/or in their mid 20s might see a little of their experience in the short piece through G and her peers.”

I encourage everyone to watch and listen to this masterpiece
