East London singer/songwriter Iman Lake is a storyteller who blurs the line between RnB, Hip-Hop and alt pop to immerse listeners in diverse, forward thinking soundscapes. Working closely with creative director Azeez Bello, Iman’s music is accompanied by a strong alternative visual dimension.
The pair’s latest project sees the release of a comic book and music video entitled ‘Seeking a Friend’ which draws inspiration from the illustrations of Alan Moore’s groundbreaking graphic novel ‘Watchmen’. Out 6th August, there will be physical copies available as well as a digital version which comes to life with the scan of a QR code, taking viewers on an animated journey with a musical narration.
On the track, Iman teamed up with producers Hotel October and Grace Acladna to deliver a colourful alt pop jam which bursts with feel good vibes. Iman’s vocals shine throughout as his playful melodies play with some vintage sounding electric guitar flourishes. The music video, Directed and animated by Azeez Bello showcases scenes from the comic book which was written by Emmanuel Daniels with illustrations by Satria Wahyu. Speaking of the track and music video, Iman says:
“When you think about disaster movies where the world ends it’s always a bit morbid, when we were making the song we decided to flip that on its head and turn the end of the world into a party instead!”
Part two ‘Seeking a Friend’ continues the story that began in ‘Stanger Days’ as we follow the series protagonist Iman further along his journey as he is thrust headfirst into a new adventure, meeting a range of strange and interesting characters along the way. While maintaining the themes present in the first issue, ‘Seeking a Friend’ is more personal as we delve deeper into Iman's life, we meet his friends, explore his world and witness him in fantastical romantic situations, paralleling the tone of the accompanying song.
