Salamsalammusic - Interview

Salamsalammusic is a start-up artist management agency. Wordplay Magazine sat down with Salamsalammusic founder, Anwar, to ask him 10 questions about the groups latest projects, his passion for music and the inspiration behind his YouTube series Anwar's kitchen.

1. Hey, Anwar. For people who are not familiar with Salamsalammusic, can you give some background information?

Salamsalammusic started to help young and upcoming talent showcase their abilities. We aim to help the younger generation stay off the streets by organising studio sessions and helping them turn their energy into something special. We assist with marketing to help them get their music out on all digital platforms. Helping the younger generation has always been my goal. I want to help open their eyes to the notion that if you have the talent, and are willing to put the effort in, anything is possible. Salamsalammusic started doing a weekly salam talent and flow show on YouTube where we showcase multiple artists. Through the series, we help talented young musicians regardless of colour, age or gender. 

The name, Salamsalammusic was inspired by my catchphrase. One day I was chilling with the team, and they pointed out how often I say salam salam, which means peace peace. The word salam had become a slogan at that point. I also remember sitting down with my best friend Carl (@composebeats) and asking him for advice about what I should do in life. He told me to follow my passion. Another great inspiration behind the movement was my wife, Aisha. My wife is also an artist, and she helped open my eyes to digital music marketing.

2. So, are Salamsalammusic a record label?

Yes and no, we are currently managing rapper J Shar, but in his case, he puts out his music and advertises it through our channel. If an artist seeks us out and asks to be managed, then we take them under our wings and show them how to navigate the road to success. We advise on how to get their music on all digital platforms and so on. At the same time, we are in contact with many different artists who just love to be around the team and record for fun, which is all good as networking is always advantageous. 

3. What does the name ‘Salamsalammusic’ mean to you?

The word means Peace Peace. It's a beautiful word emphasising how blessed we feel. Also, it's used as a warm greeting.

 4. What makes Salamsalammusic unique?

I believe that at Salamsalam music, we have an approachable and likeable vibe. Anyone from any walk of life can approach us, we will always show love and respect towards them. We give anyone a chance, and as long as they are willing to have the confidence to try, we will give them a platform to showcase their talent. We never turn anyone down.

5. Has Covid-19 had an impact on how you run your business?

Corona has had a major impact on everyone. Things have slowed down a lot. People were afraid to come to the studio and were just scared of going out in general. This year we started a side project called Salam street talent. We upload, promote and represent artists such as Leo, who send us videos of themselves performing on the streets of their cities. Being outside minimises the risk of Covid spreading, and it's amazing to have made connections on the other side of the world. (Leo is a rapper living in Ghana).

6. Your Youtube channel features a mix of Salamsalammusic produced music videos and, of course, the series ‘Talent & flow’. Can you tell Wordplay readers about how you orchestrate those sessions?

It's all down to teamwork. My best friend (@composebeats) Carl, has a studio in the ends, he will usually let me know which dates he's free, and then we book studio sessions at his place. Some of the freestyles were shot and edited by EKM. From time to time; an artist will also contribute, so it involves teamwork and effort to get everything done to a high standard.

7. It appears that as well as music, you are also passionate about cooking. Viewers can check out your series Anwar's kitchen on YouTube for inspo. Have you always been interested in cooking, or is it a newfound lockdown hobby?

I've always loved cooking. My grandmother inspired me so much growing up. I used to watch her cook, I just took it all in and added my own flair.  

8. If you could invite three of your hip-hop heroes over for dinner and drinks one night (post covid) who would you invite and what would the menu be?

I'd have to invite 2Pac, DMX and Biggie Smalls. The menu would look like this:

Falafel and samosas with mint sauce, for starters.

Lamb Shoulder and Rice for the main.

Tiramisu for dessert.

9. What has been the most memorable moment for salamsalammusic?

There have been quite a few memorable moments, but getting our first 1k subscribers on YouTube sticks in my mind. Also, watching artists we've worked with go independent is always rewarding.

10.  How can people get involved with salamsalammusic?
