MEYY - hyli (How You Like It) (Single) + 10 Questions
MEYY announces her ‘Neon Angel’ EP, alongside the release of her brand new single ‘hyli’ (How You Like It’).
MEYY’s upcoming EP is due for release in October and also includes recent single, ‘Orchids’.
From a young age, MEYY has been training and using her body as an instrument in contemporary dance and music. She taught herself how to play the piano, developing her skills as a singer, songwriter and producer. She has an interesting approach to production, using her mathematical brain to create ethereal soundscapes. She also co-directs all her music visuals, bringing to life her clear creative vision for her art.
MEYY lives and studies between London, Brussels and Delft, immersing herself in different cultures, exploring robotics engineering and finding her place in the world with her Belgian/South Korean heritage. A singer, songwriter, producer and dancer, MEYY burst onto the scene with debut single ‘Angelic Lies’ in 2019 and was followed up by the similarly well-received ‘Spectrum’, an EP that amassed more than 500,000 streams and saw her win the Red Bull Elektropedia award for ‘Most Promising Artist Of 2021’. There’s plenty more to come from MEYY this year, her Neon Angel EP marks a new chapter for the emerging talent.
Meyy sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
It was just something that was always there. I’ve been singing and making up melodies in my head for as long as I can remember. And then ever since I picked up on playing the guitar and piano, the “songwriting” followed organically. The first real song I wrote was when I was 11 for my grandparents’ anniversary. It had a verse, hook, bridge and everything haha. So I guess that the actual songwriting began there.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
My list of dream collab’s is endless but the absolute endgame would be FKA Twigs, Kanye West, James Blake or Rosalia. I think that all four of them are absolute pioneers in their field and true icons. Staying true to their own sound and not only becoming very successful with it, but really being a voice for or setting off a whole new wave in music.
3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the corona virus pandemic?
In the beginning of the pandemic, there was a moment where I became very insecure about my music. I wasn’t really making a lot of new stuff because I couldn’t go to the studio and I was very focused on university, but I did feel some pressure to release or make new music. The contrast with my pre-pandemic life was very big because music-wise everything was going pretty fast for me and I was always on the move, physically and mentally. So I guess that that point of stagnancy and pressure made me uncomfortable and doubt a lot of things. But after a couple of weeks of feeling very uneasy and even considering to quit music, I had this moment of catharsis where I really just let it all wash off of me. I remembered that music, to me, is something that should come from the soul and should be able to evolve unhurriedly. This new mindset made me grow even more into my project.
4. How would you describe your sound?
Somewhere between new time r&b and dreamy bedroom pop.
5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
Winning the Redbull Elektropedia most promising artist award.
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
Just really feel it. Sink into the story that you create with your music and cancel out all the other noise. And definitely working with other people who match your aesthetic.
7. Are there any artists on your radar at the moment that we should check out?
Cosha, Lava La Rue, Ojerime, Ashley Morgan, Pippin, Tsugi.
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
Jhene Aiko - Trip / 070Shake - Modus Vivendi / Joey Badass - b4 da$$.
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
I’m still at uni studying civil engineering, so I do that in my free time. A part from that I love hanging out with my friends in the city. dancing and laughing.
10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?
water, lowlights and snacks.
