Pitch 92 - Intervals (Album) + 10 Questions
High Focus Records is pleased to welcome Pitch 92 back into the spotlight, with the arrival of his latest solo album. Following a brief hiatus after the release of the acclaimed, 3rd Culture, in 2019, the London-based producer makes a triumphant return with Intervals. Production-wise, the album is more of a definitive hip-hop affair this time around, with Pitch focusing his attention on the world of boom-bap. Where his exploration might have strayed into other areas on the previous project, it was hip hop that gave a lot of people their first taste of his music and so it remains a favourite for fans and critics, as well as for the man himself. It’s also somewhat of a personal album. Initially started back in early 2020, it was then scrapped and the idea reborn with a bevy of new beats. During the interim Pitch underwent a few personal setbacks, but instead of lamenting, he bounced back into the studio and Intervals was given life.
The features offer up some familiar favourites, with Pitch reigniting the creative spark he has found with a number of the UK’s finest MC’s, plus ushering a few new names into the mix. The previously released double A-side single with Lord Apex, Jehst and Kiko Bun- Suttin' In The Trunk / Good with Me - hinted at the levels the remainder of the album reaches, while the more recent singles with Jehst and King Kashmere – Live from London and Iph-Ro, respectively – corroborate it as fact. Kofi Stone, Verbz, Confucius MC, Dr Syntax, Verb T and Manik MC, are all on hand to keep the UK flag flying high, while from the other side of the Atlantic, Doctor Outer AKA Mattic, lends his golden era flow to the proceedings. The international sector is also represented with a contribution from ASM, who bring their multinational talents to the table.
Pitch sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
My sister gave me some MF Doom, Dilla, De la Soul CDs when i was around 11/12 and i became obsessed. She was friends with a group called ASM who went to our school in Frankfurt. They feature on Intervals.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
I’d love to work with Pharoahe Monch, Black Milk and Busta.. UK wise Skinnyman, Kano and Ghetts.
3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the corona virus pandemic?
I started this album in February 2020 and was in the studio pretty much every other day in London with different artists, but then when the pandemic hit, i moved back to Manchester which made it difficult to finish it. So i scrapped it and moved back to London in September 2020 and started again around February 2021.
4. How would you describe your sound?
It’s definitely inspired by Madlib and MF Doom.. I do quite a few different styles but i think its soulful and dynamically clean sounding with a raw edge.
5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
I have a few.. But one of them would be releasing this album. I went through a lot making it and its definitely deep and personal to me. The album cover which is designed by my long time homie Nearski is full of personal things.
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
Do what you feel, try and find your own sound and stay in your lane, don't watch what other people are doing. Things happen differently for everyone. Also be sure you really really love making music!
7. Are there any artists on your radar at the moment that we should check out?
My bro Mattic (Doctor Outer) is heavily slept on. I out him up there with the all time greats. Jerome Thomas also.
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
Been digging the new Swindle stuff.. Ill Scholars, the new-ish Petestrumentals tape.. Karriem Riggins.. DJ Harrison.
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
I’m just a usual normal dude, hanging out with friends, playing basketball.. but I'm mostly making music day to day.
10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?
Food, oxygen and water.
