Piper Grace - Things Lovers Do (Single) + 10 Questions

South West singer-songwriter Piper-Grace drop’s her new single ‘Things Lovers Do’.

A soulful modern R&B jam, ‘Things Lovers Do’ pairs Piper’s effortlessly slick vocals with a similarly smooth, downbeat production.

“‘Things Lovers Do’ was written about the difficulties of love and highlights the importance of affection,” Piper explains. “I feel the vibe of the song is a dreamlike fantasy about the confusion of romance, and I would love for people to connect with this, from all relationships and situationships.”

Raised in the quiet reaches of South West England, with Rihanna and Nina Simone providing sonic detail to her childhood, it was no surprise Piper-Grace was already singing at the tender age of two. Her soulful, sultry R&B provides a personal and vulnerable take on the intricacies of young love.

One of the UK’s most exciting young R&B talents, Piper-Grace continues to grow with every release.

Piper sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

Music has always been a huge part of my life. My mum has many stories about how I would attempt to sing from the moment I could talk, she tells a story of her cooking at home when I was about 2 years old. She had the radio playing Cant Get You Out Of My Head by Kylie Minogue and she walked into me with my yoghurt spoon in my hand as a microphone singing the melody in what she said was pitch perfect.

2. Who are some artists thatd influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

H.E.R’s songwriting really speaks to me on a personal level and I think we’d definitely have lots to talk about.

Giveon’s style and tone is something I feel like the music scene needed and it was really amazing to see his growth in this last year.

Mahalia has proved that R&B in the Uk is possible and is an inspiration to me.

And Summer Walker, everything she creates I’m in love with.

I’d love to work with all of them one day.

3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the corona virus pandemic?

A lot happened in the first lockdown, I went back home to Exeter for months meaning I wasn’t near a studio. I had to get a friend to post my mic to me so I could try to learn how to lay down vocals at home. It was difficult but I had lots of ideas for when I could finally get back into the studio, so while it slowed me down, it didn’t stop me.

4. How would you describe your sound?

Refreshing and relatable, I want my lyrics to speak to people in different ways. I feel like my style is very versatile, and there is so much more to come.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

I’m at the start of my career so I’d say my proudest moment thus far would be when ‘Things Lovers Do’ was played on BBC Radio London a few weeks ago before being released. That made me super excited for what’s to come.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

My advice would definitely be to take your time in the initial stages. You need to make sure that your art is your vision of perfect, because that is what is most important to your development. Practice makes perfect, your songwriting and abilities will improve with time.

7. Are there any artists on your radar at the moment that we should check out?

Romell, Jayla Darden, Benjamin A.D and Gyakie.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

I’ve been so consumed lately by ’TEMPORARY HIGHS IN THE VIOLET SKIES’ by Snoh Aalegra. Another great one is ‘We’re All Alone In This Together’ by Dave. To round it off, ‘Made In Lagos’ by WizKid.

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

In my downtime I like to take care of myself, facials, nails, hair care, theatre trips and going on walks. I also love sunsets, If I can catch one of those it makes me happy. Stargazing too.

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

Water, Lip balm and good vibes. The studio is my happy place.
