PREMIERE: IAMDDB - JGL (Single) + 10 Questions

IAMDDB is a modern renaissance woman. A faucet of self-expression and a powerhouse of talent, her art spans modes of creation: she is a singer, songwriter, fashion mogul, and 21st-century visionary leaking her ingenious into global stardom.

‘JGL’ is hypnotic and sultry in true DDB style but instrumentally is another exploration of her ever-growing sound. We can flute sounds, interesting FX, horns and slow dancehall based drums and we really will be whining our waists to this bop. Showing off her versatility, a completely different sound to her recently released ‘Silver Lines’ which had hints of a KAYTRANADA vibe produced by the very talented Mike Brainchild.

‘JGL’ is an elevated celebration of the rebirth of IAMDDB, celebrating her unique goddess like strength, captured through stunning visuals and DDB’S captivating, spiritual energy and vocals.

The track is a breath-taking celebration of black women, showcasing their strength and beauty, highlighted through DDB’s powerful song writing and expressive lyrical rhythm.

Inspired by her influences from her Portuguese and Angolan heritage. She is wildly personable, unfiltered and a self-assured musician. Her subject matter in her music is a strong reflection on her core values of; female advocacy, positivity, spirituality, wellness and cutthroat realism.

IAMDDB has fronted campaigns for Mulberry, Browns, Moncler and Tommy Hilfiger. She has also been featured in leading publications British Vogue, Elle, GQ, Wonderland, Dazed, Evening Standard, The Guardian, Crack, NME and many more and has recently covered for Arcadia Magazine.

DDB recently announced a tour earlier this year that is running from October - December 2021 across Europe and her debut album will be dropping early next year!

We sat down with IAMDDB to interview her ahead of her new release:

So tell me how did it all begin, what sparked your passion for music?

My papa is a musician, bass and drum player, with a masters in sounding engineer so I guess it runs in the blood. Growing up he would surround me with instruments and music, a wide variety of music at that. His taste was so elite and worldwide. He is my number one inspiration so big up Manuel De Brito, he was and still is such an icon in my life.

What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the coronavirus pandemic and did this effect collaborations for your album ‘Music’?

I haven’t really faced any issues other than not being able to travel when I want. It gave me the time to work and perfect my craft. I aim to always find the lessons in situations I can’t control. In regards to collaborations, I’ve been able to solidify myself as a credible musician with hardly any features, I’ve only ever done one feature and that was a friend of mine. Other than that I am so confident in my ability and talent that I don’t chase or beg features - it’s not my steeze.

Your single JGL is about celebrating black women, could you tell us a little more about this track?

This song will be the new bad b anthem. This anthem is for all the boss ladies who know their worth without a man and know how to position a man in their life to benefit THEM. In this generation, there are way too many women doing things for men instead of themselves. It’s time to wake up and smell the coffee. We are the creators and they (men) are our sons. JGL is a reminder of where true power lies - in the temple of a WOMB-MAN.

What’s the proudest moment to date for you as an artist?

Touring with Lauryn Hill. That will remain Number 1 for a while I think. Super humbling experience. Great vibes and I owe her a huge thank you for calling out a lot of devils that were around me at that time. I always cherish the advice she gave me as she really could see the dangers I was in before I did.

Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

My faith in god keeps me grounded. You need tough skin. Not everyone can handle the pressures and violations and tribulations it comes with. But if you have a strong unit that actually protects your rights, if making music is your passion and you are ready to hear 100 no’s before getting the credit you deserve - then it’s the perfect war field to enter.

Name 3 people you would love to work with and why?

Chanel the Brand - I feel like I could add a edgy spice to their branding. I feel like a lot of major global brands play it too safe with the people they choose to champion what they do. We need to go back to the 90s where it was bright, beautiful, authentic, fearless and unfiltered.

Wizkid - he is such a legend for the African culture. His music is so inspiring and spiritual, I think we would merge very well sonically. I admire how he has manoeuvred through this industry. I aim to have just half the effect he has had on the world. Timeless music and humble artist.

Jordan Rakei - he is one of the most amazing Australian musicians I have ever come across. I love his tones and textures, as well as his choice of chords. I love a good chord progression. His messaging in his music always speaks deeply into my soul, I think we could make very healing music together.

What’s the album or song you’ve been rinsing recently?

Song - C Kay - Love Nwantiti. This has been on replay for the last 3 days lol. I just love how he sings and how sweet the frequency is. It makes me want to whine my waist and fall in love lol. I love how artists from Africa are on the rise. It’s amazing to see them gain the credit they deserve.

What’s the best concert you’ve been to and where was it?

I am my favourite performer. I am my favourite musician. I love how I am unafraid to pour my heart and soul into every performance I do. I want my fans to feel it as deeply as I do everytime. Am actually on a European tour this year, 27 dates. It’s going to be such a healing process. Tickets are available on Songkick - IAMDDB.

Name three things you can’t live without?

Bible, Incense and Shades.

What have you got planned for the not so distant future?

Album, global domination, spiritual ascension and doing everything that improves who I am in body mind and spirit.

What an absolute Queen!
