Likkle Jay - Pon Time Riddim (EP) + 10 Questions
Having recently landed a role at the one and only Abbey Road studios and gotten her first major credit as an engineer on Chris Brown's ‘Breezy’ album; this has been an exciting year for Likkle Jay. And it's not over yet! She continues to provide the good vibes with her latest project 'Pon Time Riddim'. Likkle Jay has decided to put together a riddim tape and give us not just one great song but 4, to one of her infectious productions. (Riddims are a big part of West Indian music, in both Dancehall and Soca; where various artists take their own spin on an instrumental).
‘Pon Time Riddim’ features artists such as David Monroe, Jayrichie, Dainá, CHARLIE IS READY and more! Each bringing their own vibe and style to the instrumental. Produced and engineered by Likkle Jay.
Likkle Jay sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
I’ve always been a lover of music from a very young age. It’s when my dad taught me how to DJ and also program beats at the age of 10 that I really fell in love with making music. It’s really been my biggest hobby ever since.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
I’d have to say Beyoncé, Chris Brown, Tone Stith are the first to come to mind as recent influences. I would love to work with them one day.
3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?
I have a riddim tape that I’m releasing this month; 'Pon Time Riddim'. It features quite a few artists such as David Monroe, Dainá, CHARIE IS READY, Joeymvne and more! It’s more of a dancehall vibe, but still melodic. Can’t wait for everyone to hear what we’ve been working on.
4. How would you describe your sound?
I think it varies but it’s always very melodic and mostly upbeat. My music is always going to have R&B elements to it, but can be a cross between Caribbean styles and hip hop.
5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
It would have to be getting an engineer credit on Chris Brown’s album ‘Breezy’. He has been one of my favourite artists since I was young so to be involved in his album is really a dream come true. Plus it’s my first credit on a major release.
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
Just try to be consistent. Try to build your profile and reach out to people you wanna collaborate with as much as you can. Shoot your shot! Be confident in your own skills/talent.
7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?
Yes! There are loads of upcoming artists doing their thing right now. Other than the ones you’ll get to hear on my project, you should deffo check out: Chase Young, Ling Hussle, Bellah and Shaé Universe to name a few.
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
Bellah - Adultsville
Blxst - Before You Go
Chris Brown - Breezy
Beyoncé - Renaissance
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
Chill with family/friends, watch shows or films.
10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?
As long as I have a midi keyboard, some good monitors, and probably a snack/drink then I’m good lol.
