Once again, it’s hit that time of year where Scotland’s finest artists, get a bit of light shined upon them, at the SAMA’s, (Scottish Alternative Music Awards). The SAMA’s cover all genres but since this is Wordplay… we’re going to be focussing on the Best Hip Hop category. So let’s get the ball rolling and introduce this year’s nominees…
We’ll kick it off with Tzusan…
Tzusan is an MC and producer from Edinburgh, whose recent full-length debut album, 'WSPSNSYRP', was released as a beguiling take on grime which nods to sci-fi, jazz, noise, world and classical vibes. This is an artist who we’ve featured a lot over the past few years. He exclusively produces all his own instrumentals and with his uniquely creative videos, it’s little wonder he was nominated for this category.
Now let’s have a look at Psweatpants…
Psweatpants is an artist hailing from the South-London who is currently based in Glasgow. This MC’s vivid lyricism can be heard on his recent banger 'The Rave'. This old school UKG track, (which also features hypnotic melodies and soothing ear-nectar from Dundee’s own, Priyah); seen massive support from Radio 1 and Gemma Bradley on BBC introducing. Psweatpants was also recently in the running, as one of the finalists at the SAY awards (Scottish Album of the Year), for the ‘Sound of Young Scot’ award.
Now, representing the gyaldem… we have Becca Starr…
Becca Starr describes herself as "a self-producing blue-haired Scottish sprite" from Paisley.
Starr received praise for breaking the silence around relationship abuse with the launch of her acclaimed album, 'Speak Of No Evil' which raised funds for Scottish Women's Aid.
Last but by no means least is Sean Focus…
Sean Focus is a multi-talented rapper, producer, educator and entrepreneur residing in Edinburgh who designates his unique sound as “Afrocentric”. He has an extensive back catalogue and you might have seen some of his videos on the likes of GRM Daily, Link Up TV and many more.
On top of that, he also created the ‘The GRDN Sessions’; a short series on channel IMVAIZE, where artists could come as lockdown restrictions were easing, to safely showcase their skills and keep the live performance scene in motion.
So now you know who’s who, the rest is up to you. Public voting went live today and it only takes a 2 tics and a few clicks to select who you think deserves the win.
