Tutankhamun - Big Foot (Single)
British multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Olly Toomey - signed to Nice Guys Records - has continued to tease his solo project and debut EP ‘Tutankhamun’ with new single release ‘Big Foot.’
It is the third track from the upcoming EP, following ‘Ask Me Again’ which dropped back in August and ‘New Year’s Resolution’ in July. ‘Tutankhamun’, Olly’s debut EP, will arrive later this year.
Commenting on the new track, Tutankhamun shares: “‘Big Foot’ is a song about feeling out of control and the abandonment that comes with that. At the time I felt quite overwhelmed, frustrated, and a bit stuck perhaps. I wrote the song at a time when I was struggling to see how everything would fall into place”. The soundscapes deploy luminosity, amid bleaker feelings, through a ‘hopeful’ undercurrent and the single offers a reassuring contrast that invites the listener into the artist’s own world. The track evokes feelings of reassurance, through jazzy basslines and enveloping choruses.”
Olly spent a chunk of his childhood living in South East Asia, exposing him to a multitude of cultures, as well as genres of music; something he credits as having a strong influence on his experimental sound, production and approach. A versatile instrumentalist (formally trained on the keys, guitar, synths, drums, bass, percussion and saxophone), Olly draws influences from a wide range of instrumental music from the 60s and 70s, from the likes of Zig Zag, Hugh Masekala, Lloyd Miller, George Duke, Tony Allen, The Fetback band, and The Gautiers. More recently, artist influence comes from Gotts Street Park, Skinshape and Inflo. After recording music from his bedroom, Olly and his single ‘Navel Gazing’ were discovered by BBC Introducing in 2021. Fast forward a year and Olly is about to release his first EP with the Nice Guys family.
Inspired by soul, jazz and psychedelic music, Tutankhamuns’s first LP successfully blends the genres together. All tracks were written, performed, produced and mixed by Olly, with NYR, Sinnerman and Heart of Gold, accompanied by his brother James on the drums. The triumph of ‘Tutankhamun’ is Olly’s live touch to the record: the listener can enjoy a natural flow of moody funk.
