A prodigy of the legend that is Fumez The Engineer, Megz a rapper from Southall London has fought for his respect in the London scene. Growing up around racism the rapper has learnt to navigate around the trials and connotations that fall upon him constantly. This journey has led to a positive focus around his name, cementing his beginning in the rap industry.

Megz raps on lived experiences, hitting hard to his viewers unveiling the harsh realities of where he has come from. His recent freestyle released on GRM Daily hit nearly 300k views, with viewers left in shock on his raw flow. Another heavy track released in the heat of lockdown last year by Megz hit similar figures called ‘Wouldn’t Bet Against Me’.

Not only does Megz have an art for music, but his entrepreneurial efforts have flourished in his brand ‘Pirates’. Cultivated alongside his childhood friend Fuad, the pair draw inspiration from Megz’s hometown Somalia. The brand has been used as a key for Megz to give back to his community, creating safe spaces for youngsters to play sport and showcase their talent.

Megz sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

It started at a very early age, my uncles were musicians and are responsible for a lot of the traditional somali music back home.

The spark came from seeing the responses they received within the community.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

I’m influenced by today's scene in general, in terms of specific artists, my original influences come from the songs I’ve grown up listening to. I’m from the r&b hip hop rap era. Usher , Lloyd , 50-cent , ja rule. Etc.

3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the corona virus pandemic?

I didn’t really occur problems during the pandemic, I was working on my craft during the time. I have full capability of releasing music in general anytime, my manager fumez the engineer and has made it possible for me to occur next to no problem.

4. How would you describe your sound?

My sound is nostalgic but at the same time current. I’m very old school in terms of lyrics, I believe music should speak to you. The music out now sounds good but has no depth. I bring both worlds together.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

Performing in front of 20,000 people for the first time ever at the Leeds festival. To also do it with my brother, my friend and manager fumez the engineer.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

It sounds cliche, but keep going because to someone you're everything.

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

Me.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

Plugged in.

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

If it’s not making music, it’s listening to music and fashion etc.
