PREMIERE: FELA.Mi - GENESIS (EP)
FELA.Mi is among the most exciting emerging talents in the underground UK rap scene. He’s been rapping since he was 11 and surrounded by music for as long as he can remember. In the past 18 months he’s put out several releases combining thoughtful rap with catchy hooks and club-friendly beats, including recent singles ‘Season’ and ‘Back Down’ — as recommended by BBC Music Introducing DJs Jaguar and Danny Fullbrook.
He comes from a rich community of creatives, working with artists like the BMG rising-star Surya Sen and Bone Slim from the NiNE8 collective - receiving praise from the likes of Pete Tong, Danny Howard, Jess Iszatt and Jeremiah Assamiah on BBCR1 - as part of a bubbling hub of London musicians. After quitting his day job and more than five years touring London’s open mic circuit, FELA is now fully focused on music, with a hard drive full of material and his new EP “GENESiS”.
Lead single, REViVAL, is a nu-disco summer anthem that may come as a surprise to some but it is undeniably a stand-out record amongst the singles that we’ve heard from FELA. “I just want to fill you up, know that you can't get enough” quoted from FELA on this track as melodic synth plays out underneath - produced by Cheap Limousine. REViVAL’s raunchy messaging captivates the listener from the very beginning, however, a closer listen reveals the duality of the song and it’s true meaning, giving us similar vibes to its predecessor SEASON. The content of the song once again reveals multiple layers to FELA.Mi that we’ve not seen from many other artists in the genre.
