Amahla - I Know What They're Thinking (Single)

Singer-songwriter Amahla confronts the pandemic's grip on our mental health in her powerful new single ‘I Know What They’re Thinking’. Using her own experience Amahla hones in on Gen Z’s response to the pandemic, summing up how our prevailing ‘Zoom era’ has made us all more introverted and anxious.

Now and then you hear a voice that captures you straight away. Amahla’s was just that. A generational artist in the making. And don’t just take that from me but from funk Godfather Nile Rodgers himself. He described Amahla as “Inspirational, when I watch her perform and now that I know how she composes for me it's something exciting to watch. When a person is that involved in their storyline it's a wonderful thing. Honest, sincere and organic.” The Hackney-born soul singer and songwriter was inspired early on. Raised in a Caribbean household, her childhood found her spending much of her time reading literature and listening to classic vinyl records that were left over from the house parties of the 1970’s in her parents' residence. Her latest single finds her exploring the impacts the lockdown and global pandemic had on her generation. A generation that is battling with an unfortunate growing mental health and anxiety issue. Her distinct and soulful vocal tone takes the spotlight in this song, one filled with rich neo-soul guitar progressions and smooth jazz-leaning drum grooves.

When asked about ‘I Know What They’re Thinking’, Amahla details that “Older generations underestimate our resilience and our vulnerability. We’re made to feel like our 20’s are the time we should be living our dreams but everything feels so disparate, we’re constantly on edge. Economic crashes, a global pandemic, political crises, women’s safety, body image is warped, and none of my friends can afford to move out. Offline nothing is in our control anymore. There is lots of space for escapism but I want to write the songs that reflect where we are as a culture, and we’re f*cking anxious!”
