bshp - 10 Questions

Fast-rising UK singer-songwriter bshp has dropped her new single ‘STFU’, out now on SoundOn by TikTok/ Outcry.

Underpinned by her soaring, pitch-perfect vocals, ‘STFU’ is a heart-on-sleeve ballad that sees bshp take a stand against her ex partners’ inefficiencies. Shot in her own apartment, the accompanying official video centres around a piece-to-camera that accentuates the personal nature of the lyrics.

Her first track of the new year, it follows on from her most recent singles ‘Every Song’ and ‘Solid Gold’, collaborations with Duvall and Disciples respectively, that have racked up over 10 million combined Spotify streams.

‘STFU’ was written when I was obviously pissed off with someone,” bshp explains. “I’ve had my fair share of bad relationships, and I think being in controlling, dictatorial situations is something a lot of people have experienced. But I remember being in the studio with people I trusted and we wanted to create a light hearted spin on being in that type of relationship and how to take your power back. There was a-lot of emotional sentiment to that song, despite it sounding  sassy and like I didn’t care.”

bshp sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

I’ve always loved music, I have my parents to thank for that cause they always had such a variety of music playing in the house. I was always shy at school so I never really showcased my singing but I knew I loved it. I actually went to a dance school as a hobby, I did that for years and one year I decided to take part in an annual competition where I sang, and that was definitely the start of something for me. After that I went on to do musicals and shows outside of school for fun. I never got into writing and recording till much later, I was still in full time work whilst doing that, it was like a late discovery for me.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

Would love to work with Coldplay one day, Ive always been a huge fan since I was young. Big goal I know but I just love them. I listen to a lot of U.S r&b, artists like Lucky Daye, 6lack, Don Toliver, Giveon…wow to collaborate with any of those would be a dream.

3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?

I will be releasing singles this year. I also have written some stuff for other artists which will be coming out, but I can’t say you anymore otherwise I will get in trouble….haha.

4. How would you describe your sound?

My sound is pop… Such a hard question really. R&B holds a large place in my heart and those elements will always come through.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

I think releasing music will always make me so proud; especially the first time.

It’s such a process to look back on, from creating the song to shooting a video and everything that is built around a release.

Going on tour before lockdown has to be a highlight, the whole experience of singing everyday for a couple of weeks reminded me exactly why I Chose to be an artist.

I will always be proud of having a feature with Disciples too as I’ve always massively admired their music. It was on the bucket list so to tick that off was amazing.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

Patience is so important and you will learn that over time. Never stop creating music, even when you think you’re sitting on good tunes, don’t stop. You just can’t go wrong and you can never have too much music. Your ideas and taste will change so much as you’re finding yourself as an artist and there might be a place for some of that music you’ve made over time, even if its not for your project.

7. I work with some amazing Up and coming artists and producers.

I’m a huge fan of Eljay and Bhav, their production is so versatile.

There’s 2 writers who are my go to, they’re so good-Pippa glen and joe Killington, untouchable talent.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

I only like a couple of whole albums collectively, and thats Jhene Aiko’s Sail out, Beyonce I am…Sasha Fierce and Kehlani’s Sweet Sexy Savage. Other than that there will be the odd tune that gets absolutely rinsed whilst I’m driving.

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

I love seeing my family and my dog, I miss being with them everyday so I make time to see them.

If I’m not making music I’m still gonna be singing and putting something up on instagram. Obviously spending time with my friends is so important, just to get away from music for a bit and laugh my head off cause they’re all hilarious.

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

Reverb, fantastic snacks, but the most important is good people with good vibes.
