Interview: Kemetstry - 'Kemez The Atlantean' EP

Initially known as Spida Lee, Kemetstry became a local legend in his hometown of Huddersfield off the back of his debut album, The Foundation which dropped in 2007, receiving airplay on Channel U, MTV Base, 1xtra & more. Since then, Kemetstry has continued dropping predominantly boom-bap heavy projects, laced with conscious lyricism which struck chords with listeners across the country. In 2013, Spida dropped one of his most acclaimed projects called the Carriacou Jack 99% EP, containing features from Beat Butcha, Klashnekoff and DJ Q. Spida decided to change his name to Kemetstry after releasing his 2016 album, Rise Of A King. Over the following years, Kemetstry shared stages with rap legends including Skinnyman, Rodney P, Pharoah Monche, KRS One, Akala and many more - including performing alongside The Beatnuts at the Chip Shop, Brixton. As well as performing, Kemetstry continued releasing singles accompanied by clothing merchandise, which has helped promote his music releases world-wide.

Despite the lockdown situation over 2021, Kemetstry still had highlights with the release of two heavy singles called No Respect, No Manners as well as Astral Plane, which received a big reception. These two singles are listed as tracks from Kemetstry’s upcoming EP, Kemez The Atlantean. “I have been working on that for probably the last two years, to be honest with you,” revealed Kemetstry.”There was no events going on, so there was no point dropping it if I can't do no shows or nothing. So I thought since we have the time, I’ll just try to make it the best I can, you know?” These singles received phenomenal support from Canadian Dad reacts, who posted positive reviews in the run up to the EP release. "Looking at the comments on his videos, people showed me love man - especially for No Respect No Manners," added Kemetsry. "That got some mad love from his platform, I've had a few from America who have downloaded the EP off the Bandcamp. He is also doing a review for the EP, so keep your eyes out for that as well."

With eight tracks listed, the project also contains features with Leeds based rapper/producer Jack Danz, who jumped on a single called OG Spirit. “It's a boom-bap vibe, a guy called Fumes The Threat produced the beat who I linked up with from America. For that beat, it's dark, it's dark... But it kind of suits Jack Danz style, so I reckoned he was the man to feature on the track.” The track has a dark theme, that touches on Kemetstry’s perceptions of spirituality. “It's like, how I believe we're all spirits inside but it is body, flesh and bone holding this spirit until it is time to move on,” explained Kemetstry. “So it goes, 'OG Spirit, serving time in this flesh and bone, until my time's up, I guess my shell is going to be my home.' But it's just raw shit, really.”

Another dope single from the EP which Jack Danz contributes to is called Biggie Bang, except instead of providing lyrics, Danz handles the production. This single also has a visual lined up to promote it, set to drop around the same time as the EP. “That's more of a trap style beat, so it's double time flow style, you know what I mean?” continued Kemetstry. “So I'm showing I've got different types of styles and flows I can deal with - give me any beat man and I'll go for it.” The video for Biggie Bang dropped earlier today, filmed by Mills Visuals and Denmarc Creary. "Mills said he had an idea - he was going to make two of me in the video," explained Kemetstry. "So I filmed myself one side and then the other, then when I seen it I was like, 'Mad.' That was all Mills' idea, man. I want to shout out Lev's Traditional Barbershop who let us film there, Ash aka Mad Antics, he's an emcee who is actually one of the barbers at the shop, he's dope man - and obviously Jack Danz on the beat."

Other than these, Kemetstry also hinted that a potential bonus track featuring a number of Huddersfield MC’s including Eskar, Micky Swags, Joshi Da Ghost and The Scriptors may drop soon as well. Kemetstry also wanted to shout out DJ Blend, for his contributions to the EP behind the scenes. “I recorded it at Blend’s and he's done all the mixing and mastering for it all,” said Kemetstry. “He's sick, man.” With the EP aside, Kemetstry has another collaboration in the pipeline with a Leeds emcee called Precinct Phantom. “I've done a feature for a project he's done - we're shooting the video for that soon, actually,” said Kemetstry. “That track's hard man, kinda different styles - it's more of a grime type of style, so it's a bit different for me but I still smashed it, man.”

Kemetstry, thank you for your time.
