Zach Zoya - Smoke & Dance (Single) + 10 Questions
One of Montréal’s hottest new artists Zach Zoya officially unveils his next creative project with the announcement of No Love Is Ever Wasted. The sophomore EP, arriving June 10th via 7ième Ciel/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company, solidifies Zoya’s reputation as a multi-faceted artist. Over the past year, creative exploration and the curiosity to evolve both himself and his artistry sparked the inspiration for the theme of this second EP.
“The idea behind No Love Is Ever Wasted came to me when I was going through a time of my life where some things felt like a waste of time. Learning to play a certain instrument and then giving up, starting a workout regimen and abandoning it, or even looking back on past relationships wondering if I had gained or learned anything from them,” Zoya reflects. “I was looking at the body of work I had, the songs I considered putting out next, and then this epiphany hit me: no love is ever wasted. By love I not only mean relationships, but also anything you’ve invested time and effort into hoping it would yield a certain result and then it not happening. Well, all of that is never for nothing. All that enthusiasm you’ve put out there is never lost, it’s lessons. You grow from failed relationships, you learn from unmastered skills or failed attempts. You might not know how or when it’ll come back to you, but that energy you put out there WILL come back.”
Smoke & Dance’ feels like what I want this summer to feel like – the biggest of parties,” says Zoya. “This is my come back song. This is the energy we have been missing for two years and I’m really trying to come back on stage with a bang! I’ve had the chance to perform it already while on tour with Charlotte Cardin and it has been so great so far - the energy just speaks for itself. It makes people want to move, dance, and have a good time. We had a party in the studio making it and it’s a party on stage when we perform it!”
Zach sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
Music has always been a part of my life from the youngest age. I honestly can’t recall a period of my life where music wasn’t a daily occurrence. We didn’t have a TV, so sitting in front of the stereo and playing the same CDs over and over again is how I killed time on rainy days.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
I would love to get a chance to work with Kendrick Lamar, will.i.am, SZA, Isaiah Rashad or even Bryson Tiller. These are all artists who have molded my style as an artist and people that I really look up to.
3. You’re just about to release a new project, tell us about it - what is your favourite song on the project?
My new EP is called No Love Is Ever Wasted. This project’s concept is really about enjoy the present moment and seeing any mistakes or failures as a lesson rather than a dead end. I think the pandemic has been a great teacher in that regard - the fact that things don’t always happen how we expect them to but we can definitely still learn and get better from those experiences. It’s never for nothing, even if sometimes it can feel like that. My favourite song from the EP would have to be “All Alone In The Universe”. It’s a very personal song and it means a lot to me. It speaks loosely about the state of the world and how I feel about it with a sprinkle of hope behind it all. It’s a love declaration. It kind of reflects the meaning of the EP as a whole as well. If it’s all for nothing and we’re all alone in the universe, at least we got to be alone together.
4. How would you describe your sound?
I would describe my sound as a mix of RnB and rap with little bit of pop in there as well.
5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
I’m very proud of my single “Start Over” featuring Benny Adam charting on Canadian radio - we just made it to TOP 10 overall!
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
Consistency is key! In the streaming era, songs can make it organically or not but one thing that’ll keep you in the conversation is to constantly provide content or stuff for people to follow along with you on your journey.
7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?
Look out for Col3trane! I just discovered him with his new song “Logan Paul”. That song’s a smash!
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
I have to be honest, I haven’t been listening to a lot of music these days. I’ve been focused on creating my own. If I had to mention one though, it would be Candydrip by Lucky Daye.
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
Learn, travel, read, work-out, but I have to say, most of my time is spent making music, performing or planning the next releases!
10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?
WATER, Snacks (sweet preferably), and the homies of course lol. I’m helpless on a computer so I heavily rely on my good friends to produce and record my voice!
