LA based newcomer emlyn delivers on her early promise with the reveal of stunning debut album,. “loneliest b!tch in america”. An album built on the honeyed vocals, searingly honest songwriting and big room ready production that has seen emlyn cement herself as an artist to watch in 2022 and beyond, this project is a coming of age body of work from an artist who has developed a passionate fanbase over recent months.. Led by focus track “temporary funeral”, “loneliest b!tch in america” is a stellar introduction. Speaking on the album, emlyn states: “loneliest b!tch in america” is an album where i write my truth. some of it is moments of angst or aggression, some of it is pure empowerment, other times it’s anxiety or the pressure i’ve put on myself to grow up. all of that is to say, i hope that you’ll take the pieces you need & leave the rest. and if you’re new to me or my music, i hope you feel a little less alone in any of those emotions as they come.
I poured every ounce of myself as a creator into this- from the writing, to the vocals, to the “perfectionist emlyn” level intricacies of the production. i hope you enjoy.
emlyn sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer out infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
I was surrounded by music as a little girl. My dad is a drummer and my brother a multi-instrumentalist. Seeing and hearing it constantly around me, I’d imagine, is what sparked my interest. To be honest, I don’t ever remember choosing to pursue music. It was never a question, just something I knew I had to do inside of me.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
The artist that’s influenced me the most in my life is, by far, Taylor Swift. I began writing songs because of her and asking myself who I was and what it meant to be an artist, using her tell-all songwriting approach as my template. I can't imagine working with her because I don’t know how I would possibly remain professional, but that would be a dream!
3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?
I am so excited about the release of my debut album, Loneliest B!tch in America. I’ve poured my heart and soul into it over the last year or so. I’m also hoping to tour this fall!
4. How would you describe your sound?
This is a tough one because I can never quite find the right words. But I would say “badass pop with a little grunge.” I don’t quite fit into the punk space, nor the rock, but the music certainly leans into an edgier world than pop. That’s the fun part about music though. Genres are incredibly fluid.
5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
By far, playing live on tour this past month was my proudest moment. Hearing people sing back my words for the first time or drive hours to tell me what the music meant to them… it’s a feeling I only ever dreamed of. I couldn’t have been more proud than those moments.
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
If you really want to do this as a career, when someone or something puts up a roadblock, you build another road. The only way I’ve gotten to where I am right now is when someone said there wasn’t a way to get something done, I found another way.
7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?
I’m a massive fan of Stela Cole, an artist who happens to be my best friend- but truly I look forward to every new release of hers. I’ve also been loving music from King Mala, GAYLE, Mothica, Amelia Moore, Upsahl, Fletcher… the list goes on.
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
I tend to be more of a “deep diver” on albums. I go back and listen to full projects to get inspiration either sonically or lyrically for my next batch of music. Lately it’s been Fergie, Britney Spears, and Miley Cyrus.
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
I love to ride rollercoasters. I used to struggle with this question but I made it one of my goals to find things that genuinely interest and excite me outside of music so that I could have a little balance in my life. Theme parks have become my escape.
10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?
Iced Coffee. My phone (for voice memos & lyrics). My dog.
