Deego - Layers (Mixtape) + 10 Questions

'Layers’, the debut mixtape from South London’s Deego, is a refreshing and timeless project packed with an exciting “mix and blend” of different vibes and flavours to create one succinct and infectious project.

With features from Michelle, Erra, Vinch and Triggss, Deego proves effortlessly that he can pack a punch when it comes to this full-bodied and top notch compilation of songs.

Key radio tracks ‘Jiggy’, ‘Skin Deep’ and ‘Rum & Weed’ are all perfect additions to add to your radio playlists and DJ sets, with Deego injecting his signature artist flair into each one.

Notably recorded between Miloco Studios and Deego’s home studio, ‘Layers’ was also mixed and mastered by none other than Darren Jones, who bears impressive credits such as artists Harry Styles, Skepta, Stormzy, Kojo Funds, J Hus, Florence and the Machine, Major Lazor and more.

Deego sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

My interest in music started young. Growing up, my household was always filled with music. It was either my older brothers blasting rap, hip hop and r&b or my parents playing traditional Nigerian music on their sound system.

I didn't actually start making music of my own until I was 13. It was just something me and my boys did for fun, and something we saw the older guys in our area doing. We went from playground freestyles to recording songs on cheap microphones and it all sort of took off from there.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

Off the top of my head I'd say, Kendrick Lamar, Wretch 32 and Lianne La Havas.

3.  What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?

I just dropped a project recently called "Layers". It's a dope tape which I feel showcases my versatility.

I have other tunes in the pipeline but I haven't announced a release date just yet.  Let's just say I'm going to explore the sing-songy style a bit more.

4. How would you describe your sound?

It's difficult to summarise my sound, but if I could use 3 words to describe it, they would be: fresh, conscious, and distinct.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

Spending months working on my tape and then having friends, family and strangers hear the final product at my listening party, for sure.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

3 tips i'd give to any aspiring artist would be to:

- Try to be as authentic as you can, don't jack a next man's style.

- Network as much as possible, talent can only get you so far.

- Invest into your craft! Time, money and resources are all important to your success.

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

I got three for you, Vinch, Triggss and Manny Audu.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

Darkoo 2 in 1.

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

If i'm not doing other creative things like coding or graphic design then I'm at events tryna network or enjoying other's work.

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

my phone, my water, and good vibes.
