vi0let - Audience (Single) + 10 Questions

Based between London and Brighton, emerging singer-songwriter vi0let reveals her stunning new single ‘Audience’, the second single taken from her upcoming debut EP ‘Believe Me When I Cry,  which is due out this September.

Produced by James Berkeley, ‘Audience’ translates a storyline of realising your true meaning for someone. Having to deal with someone in your life that isn’t good for you but feeling the pressure to uphold their expectations all whilst they use you as an emotional crutch. vi0let uses the term audience as a metaphor of having to play the role of someone's personal cheerleader. She describes how everything they do for you or others comes with the expectation of praise and admiration.

“It’s almost like they don’t really see you for you. They just want your reaction to feel better about themselves. Feeling so replaceable yet so tied down can feel really confusing and writing this song, using all these metaphors to describe the polar opposite behaviours of this person, really helped me understand my role in this situation. It’s actually not about a romantic relationship. It describes multiple friendships and family members, which can sometimes be even more painful to deal with. I didn’t want this track to be a sad one, I felt quite powerful writing it when I finally realised the role I was playing for other people. By the end of the song I say “Seems like it’s easier when I go, blocking out the life you never tried so I pack up my bags maybe you’ll grow.” Which is my way of coming to terms that it’s sometimes better to remove yourself and wish them the best.” — vi0let.

vi0let sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

It began in Ireland! Music is such a big part of Irish culture and I started learning instruments at a young age. Then I discovered Beyoncé, Adele, Avril Lavigne and Gaga and was in awe of these strong women. From there I never stopped singing.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

Some current artists that I've been influenced by are Beyoncé (always), UMI and SZA. It would be an absolute dream to work with any of them, I adore their songwriting and unique vocals as well as the messages they convey in their songs.

3.  What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?

My latest song 'Audience' is out this week which I'm super excited about! After that, I'm dropping an EP on September 29th. I'm so proud of this EP, it's the most vulnerable I've ever been in my music and I think I'm gonna surprise some people with the versatility I'm bringing to the table.

4. How would you describe your sound?

I'd describe my music as a mixture between sexy soft RnB and bad bitch Pop energy. I'm into so many genres of music so I tend to blend a lot of different styles into my songs. What I think makes my sound so 'me' are the harmonies and my vocal production.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

My proudest moment to date is the courage and strength I continue to carry. I'm honestly proudest of the fact I can push through all the self-doubt and low points as an artist and still put myself out there. It gets harder the further you get in your career but the support I get is what keeps me pushing!

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

I think my previous answer gave it away a bit: keep pushing. Keep going. If you don't stop you will eventually start to see the results come. Also, keep honest people around you.

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

I'm obsessed with UMI, Mysie and Rowena Fysx currently.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

I am patiently waiting for the Beyoncé album but until then I've been loving Yebba's album 'Dawn' and the 'Sweetener' album by Ariana Grande.

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

I love cooking so much. Especially pasta. I genuinely think I could eat pasta every day for the rest of my life and not get sick of it. Also, traveling.

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

Coffee, a scented candle and a clear mind.
