Hot on the heels of June single ‘Royalty’ and a busy live schedule, Eva Lazarus now announces her sophomore album Brandy Kisses, marking the announcement with her slick new single ‘Lessons’, featuring Birmingham talent Kofi Stone.
The extended intro of ‘Lessons’ sets the reflective tone of the Dirty Dike-produced track, opening with a looped vocal weaved with spaced out synths and bluesy keys before dropping into a smooth neo-soul production which proves to be the perfect backdrop for Eva’s rich vocals. Showing the versatility in her talents, she switches between effortless falsetto harmonies and powerful rap flows. Topped with the lyrical wordplay of Kofi Stone, ‘Lessons’ delivers a vital message that sometimes hardship is needed in order to gain strength.
“‘Lessons’ is about taking guidance from the things you regret. How there is opportunity for growth and so much power in acknowledgement and accountability,” Eva explains. “How lying to yourself can be easy but often has painful results. To be honest with yourself isn’t always instantly comfortable but it is valuable, it makes you stronger, it’s true freedom.”
The track is accompanied by a cool music video directed by Turbo Shrimp. Starring both Eva Lazarus and Kofi Stone, the video is shot around the vibrant spots of Bristol - the city that supported Eva strongly in her early music days. Linking up with Kofi at a trendy independent clothes & accessories shop, the video journeys through the pair’s day in the city as they visit a snooker club, a local Caribbean food shop and a nail salon.
Eva marks the single release with news of her sophomore album Brandy Kisses, a 16-track body of work due for release on 8th September. The project cohesively embodies the sounds that have shaped her, including soul, hiphop and soundsystem culture. The project also includes previous single releases ‘How Am I Looking?’ and ‘Royalty’, the latter of which has received support from Jazz FM , BBC Radio Manchester and BBC Radio Bristol.
